New York Jets: Keyshawn Johnson Offers Opinion On Team
Former New York Jets wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson gave his opinion on what his former team should do.
Everyone has an opinion on what the New York Jets should do. There are people clamoring for Bryce Petty to take over as the starting quarterback. Some had hoped the Jets were more aggressive in moving players at the trade deadline, such as Sheldon Richardson. But, with their insanely high asking price, it is no surprise no one bit on an offer.
It is one thing for fans to debate back and forth about what to do. When a prominent player from the organization’s past gives an opinion people will listen. Former No.1 overall pick Keyshawn Johnson has offered up his opinion on what the Jets should do going forwards.
On Tuesday Johnson was on ESPN New York radio talking about the Jets. Here is what he had to say about his former organization and what they should do with the team.
"“They need to blow that thing up,” Johnson said Tuesday on ESPN New York radio. “It’s not plug and play. Everybody thinks, ‘Oh, we just need a quarterback because we’ve got Brandon Marshall.’ Man, Brandon Marshall is as old as me. His time is coming where he has to leave. [Eric] Decker’s time is coming.“They’ve got to get young all the way around again and start from the ground up. People gotta have patience.”"
A makeover is something every organization has to eventually do and the time looks to have come for the Jets. Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles loaded up in their first offseason together in 2015. They built a team they felt was able to make a run within two years. We are not approaching the end of that second year and it is time to restock and reload.

The Jets have some younger talent on the roster they should try and groom. There is 16 rookies and sophomores on the roster, the problem is they haven’t had much of a chance to play. The Jets have 10 starters that are age 30 or older, so the message was clear these last few seasons; we are going to try and win.
The Jets haven’t done much winning this season after coming one win short of the postseason in 2015. With the playoffs out of the picture this season, the time is coming to see what the Jets have in their younger players,
This team could look drastically different as early as next season. Veterans such as Ryan Clady, Breno Giacomini, and Erin Henderson could save the team $20.3 million if they are shown the door as Jarvis Jenkins was this past week.
Mainstays such as Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, David Harris, Brandon Marshall, Nick Folk, and Sheldon Richardson could also find themselves on the trade block according to ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini if the Jets fully transition into a roster rebuild.
Keyshawn Johnson made it clear that he does not advocate firing Maccagnan or Bowles. But, he did say that the Jets should look into finding a personnel czar that can overhaul the roster and turn over every rock to try and find success. He also points out that an inability to develop a quarterback could be blamed on the head coaches, as Bowles and Rex Ryan before him were both defensive minded guys.
The Jets have a bad track record with offensive minded coaches. Part of the reason they were able to select Johnson with the first overall pick in 1996 was because Rich Kotite led the team to a 3-13 record, which he followed up with a 1-15 record in Johnson’s rookie season.
