The New York Giants moved rookie safety Darian Thompson to the IR and made three more corresponding moves with their practice squad.

The New York Giants made a number of roster moves this week. The moves were necessitated by the number of injuries they are dealing with. The biggest blow comes in the secondary, where the Giants have lost rookie safety, Darian Thompson.

Thompson was placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the season. The Giants had high hopes for the rookie out of Boise State but he has battled injuries since he joined the team. He battled a shoulder injury during the spring and summer and suffered a foot injury in Week 2 of the regular season.

Thompson was stepped on by a teammate, which led to the original injury. He returned to practice last week but experienced pain in the foot when he tried to plant off it and was removed. He visited specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in North Carolina and it was decided that he should undergo surgery.

It is a disappointing end as the Giants really liked what Thompson brought next to Landon Collins. Collins thrives closer to the line of scrimmage and Thompson is the quintessential partner as he plays well in center field. He set a Mountain West Conference recover with 19 interceptions while at Boise State.

Thompson showed that he could grasp the defense quickly and provide playmaking in the secondary. He quickly became the starter next to Collins, but as quickly as he entered the starting lineup he exited it with a injury.

In his place, the Giants have turned to undrafted rookie Andrew Adams. Adams made a bad first impression with a costly personal foul penalty against the Washington Redskins on special teams. But, he has performed admirably next to Collins as the starting free safety.

With Thompson being transferred to the IR, the Giants promoted offensive lineman Adam Gettis to the active roster. Gettis will provide insurance for Justin Pugh, who is out 2-4 weeks with a sprained MCL in his knee.

Gettis, a five-year veteran, will provide insurance in the middle of the Giants offensive line. He can play either guard or center and should provide depth until Pugh can return. He finished last season on the active roster, appearing in the season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent the first nine weeks of this season on the practice squad.

In addition to Gettis, the Giants lost wide receiver Geremy Davis off their practice squad. Davis was signed away by the San Deigo Chargers. This was not the week for the Giants to lose a wide receiver as Victor Cruz injured his ankle against the Eagles and was unable to return to the game.

To replace Davis, the Giants signed Kevin Norwood and Da’Ron Brown to their practice squad. Norwood has some NFL experience, playing 10 games with the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. In 2014, he had nine receptions for 102 yards with the Seahawks.

Brown was a seventh-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015. He spent time previously with the New England Patriots practice squad and has yet to appear in an NFL regular season game.
