The New York Giants improved to 3-3 after defeating the Baltimore Ravens 27-23 on Sunday afternoon with one of the reasons being their secondary.

Although it’s a unit that has been affected by injuries, the New York Giants secondary has been one of the strengths of the team so far this season.

The secondary was solid once again on Sunday. Even though first round pick Eli Apple did not play, they were still able to prevent Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco from throwing a touchdown. Although Flacco did not turn the ball over, he was just 26/48 for 307 yards.

The Ravens did not have a single wide receiver with over 100 receiving yards in the game. Mike Wallace had four receptions for 97 yards on nine targets. Kamar Aiken was held to four receptions for 64 yards. Cornerbacks

Cornerbacks Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Janoris Jenkins adequately defended Baltimore’s top two receivers. Safety Landon Collins also played well. He recorded 10 tackles and had one sack in the game.

More from New York Giants

The isn’t the first time this year that an opposing quarterback has struggled against the Giants secondary. Dallas Cowboys rookie Dak Prescott threw for just 227 yards and did not have a touchdown against them back in Week 1. The following week, Drew Brees had 263 yards and a touchdown as the New Orleans Saints fell to the Giants 16-13.

Last week in Green Bay, Jenkins picked off Aaron Rodgers twice. Rodgers did throw two touchdowns in the Packers’ 23-16 win over the Giants, but he was held to only 259 passing yards. Back in Week 4, Sam Bradford passed for 262 yards and one touchdown as the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Giants 24-10. During these two losses, the secondary played well enough to keep the Giants in the game. However, the offense did not do their part.

This worst that the secondary has played all year was in Week 3 against the Washington Redskins. They allowed Kirk Cousins to throw for 296 yards and two touchdowns as the Redskins beat the Giants 29-27. Cousins was able to throw on the Giants defensive backs at will. He made all the big throws that the Redskins needed him to make. After showing some vulnerability in that game, the Giants secondary has been able to bounce back over the last three weeks.

The hope is that Apple can play next week in London as the Giants will take on the Los Angeles Rams. His presence would make this talented group even stronger. Going forward, the Giants are going to need the solid play of the secondary to continue. Clearly, it’s one of the team’s best assets as of right now.
