Brandon Marshall spoke out in support of Odell Beckham Jr. as he cautions the New York Giants could lose him if the situation isn’t handled well.

Brandon Marshall has been the topic of discussion often in recent days. First the outspoken New York Jets wide receiver said that he was sticking behind struggling quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. He said he was going down with his quarterback. Now, he is sharing his opinion on something he has some experience with.

In the same building that Marshall calls home, the New York Giants have an extremely talented wide receiver of their own; Odell Beckham Jr. Beckham Jr. has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons recently.

He has garnered attention for his antics on the sidelines during games. He hit himself in the head with the kicking net against the Washington Redskins and had multiple outbursts against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4. Randy Moss gave some insight on the situation heading into the Vikings game, and now Marshall is sharing his thoughts.

More from New York Giants

Marshall, who used to be regarded as a problem child as well, knows what Beckham Jr. is going through. He cautions the Giants to be careful how they discuss the situation, as they could quickly rub Beckham Jr. the wrong way putting too much stuff out into the media.

"“Those guys over there need to be really careful,” Marshall said Wednesday. “They don’t need to be speaking out on their teammate. They need to keep that in-house because they could lose him. I’m being honest.“They need to rally behind him and give him the support he needs and handle that stuff in-house, whether good or bad, because whether they like it or not: He’s the best player on that team.”"

Giants head coach Ben McAdoo has discussed how the team needs to rally around Beckham Jr. and get him to control his emotions on the field. “I think he has great passion for the game and a great desire to be one heck of a player, and one thing I’d hate to see him lose is that drive and that passion,” McAdoo said. “I like him as a salty, competitive player. That is when he plays at his best. We just need to be productive when we’re doing it.”

There is the problem for the Giants. Beckham Jr. is at his best when he is playing with passion and anger. After his outburst against the Redskins, he went to work on the Redskins secondary. Had the Giants looked for him more, they may have come away with a victory against their division rivals instead of a disappointing loss.

Marshall understands that is how Beckham Jr. gets himself going. But, he will have to find a way to do that while not impacting his teammates.

"“He’s the type of guy that he can play with anger, he can play with rage,” Marshall said. “That’s not a distraction for him. He doesn’t need a sports psychologist for that because he’s still going to make that magnificent, one-handed catch.“The problem is it may be a distraction for his teammates. There are some things that he’s done where guys don’t want to answer the same question every single week. As far as him personally needing help, he doesn’t need help. He’s still going to produce and be the beast he is.”"

Marshall believes that Beckham Jr. is one of the best receivers in the NFL. He does not believe benching Beckham Jr. would be productive for the team, but does say that Beckham Jr. needs to find a way to reel things in, saying that Beckham Jr. can “channel [his anger] a bit better, but there’s a thin line. He has to be himself. Monday night, he was not himself. That’s not good for them, the coach coming out and saying, ‘He needs to do this.’ No, that’s the wrong way. You’re playing with fire right there.”

Marshall has a better understanding of what Beckham Jr. is going through than most people. He has had his fair share of outbursts on the sidelines but has figured out how to make it work. Beckham Jr. is still only 23-years old, so he still should be afforded some time to learn and adjust as teams begin to target him specifically.
