Is it time for the New York Giants to hold a players-only meeting as part of an intervention for wide receiver Odell Beckham?

“It’s all against me. It’s going to be that way. I have to assume that I’m always in the wrong no matter what,” said New York Giants wideout Odell Beckham when asked about his taunting penalty on Monday:

After hearing Beckham’s defense to his latest infraction, he clearly feels officials have it out for him. If true, it’s likely due to his Wrestlemania match with then-Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman.

Unfortunately, the bad boy image has followed the talented wideout into his third year. Last week, Beckham threw a sideline temper tantrum where he struck a kicking net and the inanimate object hit back. Then, filled with tears and emotion, he went home with his best on-field performance in a losing effort.

On Monday, Beckham’s emotions flared once again on the sideline, and he drew a taunting penalty. Whether fair or not, the third-year wide receiver must understand he controls the spotlight. Minnesota Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes might’ve been just as guilty in the mini skirmish, but he doesn’t have a prior history of roughhouse play.

Beckham took another finger and pointed at the media for blowing events out of proportion. Well, during the postgame press conference, quarterback Eli Manning told local reporters that Beckham brought the negative spotlight on himself, and he must be smart about his actions, per the team’s official website.

According to ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan, general manager Jerry Reese held a lengthy conversation with Beckham after the game in the locker room:

The star wide receiver’s criticism on the officiating causes deep concern for those around him. The Giants can’t afford to draw extra attention to an already tightly officiated game.

Beckham must go into complete damage control mode going forward. He should pay less attention to the referees and focus on controlling his emotions. He can’t recant his comments or rewind time to his first altercation with Norman last year.

In every game, the opposition will have a Beckham agitator on the field, and he can’t take the bait. Defensive backs will poke, prod and tug at his emotional heartstrings for a reaction.

It’s fine to play with passion and defend your manhood in between the white lines, but it’s imperative to understand his actions will be magnified times 100 due to his past. Until he’s able to move forward and control his tit-for-tat approach in a physical game, the 23-year-old wide receiver will draw penalty flags.

Thus far, head coach Ben McAdoo, Manning, Reese and even teammates have addressed or tried to contain Beckham’s outbursts. The talented wideout said “it’s a man’s game,” and he has to grow up fast.
