New York Giants running back Shane Vereen will be out for the remainder of the season with a triceps injury.

It was a rough weekend for the New York Giants in Week 3. The Giants suffered a loss to their division rival Washington Redskins, losing 29-27. The Giants were their own worst enemy against the Redskins, committing dumb penalties and playing without the discipline they had the first two games of the season.

While the Giants suffered a loss on their record, they suffered even more on the field. Injuries are a part of the game, and the Giants will have to figure out how to get past their own. They suffered a number of them against the Redskins, but one we know for sure is running back Shane Vereen.

Vereen, who is an integral part of the Giants offense, will miss the remainder of the season with a triceps injury. Vereen will be forced to undergo season-ending surgery, ending his 2016 campaign after three games.

Vereen was the starter for the Giants against the Redskins, as they are already dealing with an injury to Rashad Jennings. Vereen had a good start to the afternoon, scoring a touchdown on the Giants second drive of the game.

He had a handful of good plays after that, but he suffered a fumble on the Giants’ last drive of the first half. The Redskins were unable to take advantage as they butchered the clock management, but the Giants were going in for points and missed out on that opportunity.

We saw Vereen very little after that then, and we now know why. Fumbles are a quick way to get into a coach’s doghouse, which could have played into Vereen not being on the field. But, the triceps injury had to play into that as well.

Adam Schefter said on NFL Insiders on ESPN that Vereen suffered the injury early in the game and played through it, which could play a part in the fumble. It also makes the Giants decision to target him in the passing game late in the fourth quarter a head scratcher as well.

If Vereen was injured at all, it makes little sense to have him out there. The Giants didn’t play Jennings because they were concerned about his ability to play on passing down with an injury thumb. Vereen injured his triceps, so raising his arms to catch a pass or throw a block undoubtedly wasn’t being done at 100 percent.

If there was any position on the roster that the Giants could handle an injury at it was running back. Even with Jennings currently sidelined, the Giants have some depth with Orleans Darkwa, Bobby Rainey and rookie Paul Perkins to fill in.

The loss of Vereen will be a tough one to overcome, as he brings a lot of versatility to the offense. He can run between the tackles and excels in the passing game. But the Giants will have to make due with what they have currently, as Vereen looks to be done for the remainder of the season.
