Jacob deGrom was marvelous for the New York Mets Sunday afternoon, throwing a complete game, one-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jacob deGrom has enjoyed yet another strong season on the mound for the New York Mets. He came into Sunday afternoon’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 5-4 record and 2.61 ERA. Those numbers were improved upon, as deGrom and the Mets defeated the Phillies 5-0, giving him his sixth win of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.38.

While deGrom has won a number of games in his major league career, Sunday proved to be a first for him. For the first time in his career, deGrom threw a complete game shutout, as he dominated the Phillies with ease on Sunday.

deGrom was dominant right from the start, as he carved through a punchless Phillies lineup, needing only 105 pitches to get through nine innings. The Phillies managed only two base runners against deGrom, as he faced only one above the minimum in the game.

Funny enough, the only player on the Phillies to get a hit off deGrom on the afternoon was his counterpart on the mound, Zach Eflin. The only other player to reach base against deGrom was Ryan Howard, who walked in the eighth inning but was erased on a double play off the bat of Freddy Galvis.

More from New York Mets

In addition to the one hit and one walks, deGrom struck out seven Phillies, the third consecutive start that he has registered exactly seven strikeouts. This was the first one-hitter thrown by a Mets pitcher since R.A. Dickey did in back-to-back starts in 2012,

It was an excellent performance by deGrom, who the Mets will need to continue pitching on top of his game throughout the second half if they are to continue pushing for the postseason. With Matt Harvey out for the season, deGrom will be relied upon along with Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz and Bartolo Colon to carry the pitching staff.

While deGrom will get all the headlines Sunday afternoon, the Mets offense did enough today to back him up. Juan Lagares got the scoring started in the second inning, knocking a triple into the right field corner that scored James Loney. That would be all deGrom needed, but the Mets would add more as the afternoon wore on.

Curtis Granderson would hit his 16th home run of the season in the third inning to push the lead to 2-0. Jose Reyes would hit a RBI double in the fifth inning, scoring deGrom for the third run, while Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to finish off the scoring.

The Mets will now continue their road trip with a visit to Wrigley Field, before heading to face off with the Miami Marlins. Over the weekend against the Marlins will be when deGrom toes the rubber again, as he looks to replicate today’s performance against another NL East foe.
