The New York Mets will be activating Jose Reyes in time for their game tonight against the Miami Marlins.

The New York Mets are currently riding a five-game winning streak, mounting an impressive comeback against the Miami Marlins on Monday. The Mets scored at least one run the last five innings of the game, scoring multiple runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

The Mets offense has been performing better of late, averaging eight runs a game during their win streak. While consistency is still a problem at times, as the Mets will be happy to take the victories.

They are hoping that a new face could help add some consistency and give their offense an added element beginning today. That is because the Mets are planning to activate Jose Reyes from the minor leagues and have him making his season debut.

Reyes hasn’t appeared in a major league game yet this season as he served a suspension to start the season because of a domestic violence incident during the offseason. As a result, the Colorado Rockies would later designate Reyes for assignment. No team wanted to trade for him, and he cleared waivers shortly after to become an unrestricted free agent.

Once he cleared waivers, the Mets decided to sign their former starting shortstop after some deliberation. When news first broke, the Mets stated that they were not interested in a reunion with Reyes. But, once the injuries continued to mount and the need for a utility player arose, the Mets changed their tune and Reyes was brought back to the first organization that he knew.

More from New York Mets

Reyes has spent about the last two weeks with the short-season Brooklyn Cyclones and Double-A Binghamton Mets. The results weren’t great, as Reyes went 6-for-34 (.176 average) at the plate through 11 games.

That did not deter the Mets from their plans though, as manager Terry Collins said the Mets were taking a day-to-day approach with Reyes. They must have saw enough, as Reyes will be activated and join the team at Citi Field for tonight’s game against the Marlins.

There were talks when Reyes was first brought back that the Mets would deploy him in a utility role. Reyes has experience playing shortstop and second base, but Collins mentioned the outfield and third base as two spots we could see Reyes at once he reached the big leagues.

While the outfield experiment does not seem like something the Mets will do, at least not yet, the move to third base is in full swing. Reyes played exclusively at third base during his minor league stint, and that is where he is expected to play with the Mets.

That means Wilmer Flores will be moved into the utility role, something the Mets envisioned for him during Spring Training. Flores will move to the bench eventually, but the Mets should ride the current hot streak that he is on. Flores went 6-for-6 against the Chicago Cubs in the series finale Sunday, launching two home runs. He then went 1-for-3 against the Marlins in Monday’s victory.

With the Mets is where Reyes wanted to be, as he still resides in Long Island during the offseason. He also agreed to a deal with a team option for next season, so the Mets can keep him on the roster through the end of the 2017 season for the MLB minimum.

Fans will be able to break out their old Reyes jerseys right away as well; Reyes will get his No.7 back, as catcher Travis d’Arnaud will switch his number to allow Reyes to keep the number that he has worn throughout his major league career.
