Brooklyn Nets Rumors: The Nets will be working out point guard Brandon Jennings later today, as he is one of many potential options for the team to sign.

Brooklyn Nets rumors are bound to pick up in the coming days, as they have a ton of cap space to use during free agency. After waiving Jarrett Jack and Wayne Ellington opting out of his player option, the Nets are armed with $55 million in cap space to use this summer.

Some of that money will undoubtedly go towards the backcourt, specifically point guard, as the Nets have very little to work with currently. Isaiah Whiteside, the team’s second round pick from the 2016 NBA Draft, is expected to play point guard during his rookie season. In addition, the team signed undrafted free agent Yogi Ferrell to a partially guaranteed deal with an invite to play on their Summer League team.

While there is some young talent that the Nets are hoping to groom, the need for a veteran is there. As things currently stand, the Nets have no point guard on the roster with experience playing in the NBA. That will change in the coming days and weeks with free agency underway, and we have the first name that could fill that void.

According to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, the Nets are expected to workout point guard Brandon Jennings at UCLA Friday morning.

Jennings would be a solid addition for the Nets, as they need someone on the roster that has played in the NBA previously. While he struggled returning from his Achilles’ injury last season, he will be 21-months removed from the injury once the regular season rolls around in October.

That should only improve Jennings’ chances of turning things around, as he will be more comfortable on the court after looking hesitant at times last season shaking off the rust. The workout will be a chance for Jennings to show the Nets that he is close to returning to pre-Achilles’ tear form, as he was knocking on the door of being a top point guard.

Jennings inefficient shooting and below average defense will be what always holds him back, but his play making skills were excellent prior to the injury. He was ascending towards being one of the best at running an offense in the NBA, ranking in the 95th and 96th percentile for creating scoring plays on a per-pass basis according to ESPN.

While Jennings struggled last season returning from injury with the Detroit Pistons and then having an inconsistent role with the Orlando Magic after a trade, there is still hope he can turn things around. He will be only 27-years old when the regular season starts, so there is still a chance he can further develop his game.

Even if he doesn’t make many more advancements in his development, returning anywhere near his pre-injury form would make Jennings an above-average NBA point guard. The Nets have plenty of money to spend, but finding bargains in players such as Jennings will help keep them flexible in future seasons as well.
