New York Mets Rumors: A reunion with former Mets’ shortstop Jose Reyes does not look likely despite the injury concerns the Mets have.

New York Mets rumors will surely pick up in the coming weeks as they continue to rebuild their bench because of injuries. The Mets are decimated currently with injuries, with Travis d’Arnaud, Lucas Duda and David Wright all on the disabled list. Add in the ailing Neil Walker and Michael Conforto, and things are ugly.

Because of that, theMets could look for some help outside of the organziation. They have made some smaller moves already, trading for James Loney and Kelly Johnson to help fill in the holes. Even with those additions, the Mets could still use some help to shore things up in the lineup. Could a familiar face help in that regard?

Former Mets shortstop Jose Reyes was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, almost assuring that he will become a free agent. The Rockies have a week to trade him, and a team could claim him off waivers after that, but a team taking on his salary and baggage seems unlikely.

Reyes was suspended for the start of the season because of a violation of the league’s domestic violence policy. That alone will be enough to deter teams away from signing him, but add in a bloated contract and declining play, and there is a minuscule chance that a team would claim him and his contract.

One team we know that will not be pursuing Reyes is the Mets. While mans may dream about getting Reyes back, someone they didn’t want to lose when he left as a free agent after the 2011 season. It looks like those dreams will continue just being dreams, as the Mets are not interested in a reunion with their former shortstop according to a source that talked with ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin.

While it is a move that would excite many fans, Reyes does not fit into the Mets plans despite all of the injuries that they have. The Mets already have a shortstop in place in Asdrubal Cabrera, which would mean that position changes would have to come.

Reyes has experience playing second base, but that would mean Neil Walker being moved off his natural position. He could fill in at third base for the injured Wright, but if that was a move the Mets wanted to make it probably would have happened already with Dilson Herrera taking over at second and Walker moving. While unproven, the Mets would probably like to give him a shot before making so many moves for Reyes.

All of that shuffling around would make sense if the Mets were getting the Reyes that left as a free agent in 2011, but they wouldn’t be. His production has begin sliding in recent seasons on the field, and his problem off the field present a major problem.

Those are a lot of negatives working in Reyes’ favor, and he just does not seem worth the headache that could follow. The Mets have World Series aspirations, and signing a player in Reyes would cause more problems than answers.
