New York Mets News: Manager Terry Collins looks like he will return to the dugout tonight after going to a hospital prior to and missing Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

New York Mets news was positive for a change last night. Manager Terry Collins was released from a Milwaukee area hospital and was on his way back home to New York. Collins plans on returning to the Mets’ bench on Tuesday for the start of their homestand and series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Collins was transported from Miller Park on Sunday prior to the Mets’ game against the Milwaukee Brewers that afternoon. He was brought to Froedtert Hospital as he was feeling ill and needed attention.

There was no updates given during the game, but the Mets play on the field couldn’t have made him feel any better. The Mets lost to the Brewers 5-3 Sunday afternoon as bench coach Dick Scott managed the team. Collins was able to watch the game from the hospital, but probably wished that he hadn’t.

More from New York Mets

The Mets played a sloppy brand of baseball, as their fundamentals weren’t very sound. They were shorthanded going into the game, and as a result had only two regulars, Yoenis Cespedes and Curtis Granderson, in the lineup. Travis d’Arnaud, David Wright and Lucas Duda are all on the disabled list, while Neil Walker and Michael Conforto were too injured to play and Asdrubal Cabrera received the day off.

As a result the Mets were playing with what looked like a minor league lineup, and it looked like it at times on the field. The Mets depth is being challenged with all of the injuries that they are facing, so it is encouraging that it looks like their leader on the bench in Collins will be returning.

The Mets issued a statement regarding Collins on Monday. Here is the statement:

"“Mets manager Terry Collins was seen by Dr. Brian-Fred Fitzsimmons at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee after checking into the hospital on Sunday. Collins had not been feeling well prior to the Mets game with the Brewers. All tests came back negative and Collins has been cleared by Dr. Fitzsimmons in consultation with Mets medical staff to fly home to New York. Collins will be in uniform tomorrow at Citi Field when the Mets begin an eight-game homestand against the Pirates.”"

The Mets will be happy to have Collins back on the bench, and it is a relief that there was no major problems. Collins, who is 67-years old, is the oldest manager in the major leagues. There has been no updates yet on Walker or Conforto, but the Mets were hopeful that both would be able to return to the lineup tonight.
