New York Mets news: Neil Walker and Michael Conforto are set to visit team doctors Monday to make sure their ailments aren’t getting worse.

New York Mets news continues to roll in and it continues to be more negative than positive. The Mets have been crushed by injuries in recent weeks, as they are without three starters already in catcher Travis d’Arnaud, first baseman Lucas Duda and third baseman David Wright.

As a result, the Mets have been putting lineups on the field that many dubbed as minor league lineups. That rang especially true Sunday, as the Mets had two regulars, Curtis Granderson and Yeonis Cespedes, in the lineup. Asdrubal Cabrera was receiving a day off, but the Mets could have some more players joining d’Arnaud, Duda and Wright on the sidelined.

Neil Walker and Michael Conforto were both out of the lineup Sunday because of injury. Walker has had an extremely tough week, as he suffered a number of injuries. He was blasted in the chest by a groundball in the series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, limited to only pinch hitting on Friday.

He returned to the lineup on Saturday, but was unable to make it through the game unscatched. Walker was forced from the game after three innings because of pain in his lower back. The back problem seems to be an annual thing for Walker, and he isn’t overly concerned about it.

“I’m not concerned,” Walker said about the lower-back issue. “Like I said, I’ve dealt with this for the last four or five years. I kind of know. But it’s frustrating because you’re trying to help the team win, you’re trying to help the team in any way, shape or form. And you feel like you’re kind of holding yourself back. And then you realize you’re not helping the team, either. I’ll let this thing calm down. We’ve got a lot of season to go obviously.”

Walker saw a chiropractor on Sunday in Milwaukee and hopes to return to the lineup Tuesday when the Mets return home to Citi Field to face off with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He will see the team doctor Monday to make sure things are progressing well.

Conforto has been dealing with a wrist injury for about the past week. The soreness in his left wrist first popped up in the double-header with the Pirates earlier in the week. The soreness has not affected his swing, as he has been able to start or appear as a pinch hitter in every game since.

But, the results haven’t been great. Conforto is 2-for-19 since the series against the Pirates started, as his batting average has plummeted to .231. While the wrist may not be sore enough to keep him from playing, it is having an adverse affect on his performance.

Like Walker, Conforto is set to meet with a team doctor on Monday to further evaluate him. The Mets are hoping that nothing worse comes from the visits, as they cannot afford anymore injuries to their lineup. Their depth is already being severely tested, so losing either Walker or Conforto for an extended period of time would be crippling.
