New York Mets News: Third baseman David Wright will be out of the lineup until at least Tuesday as they try and figure out what is causing Wright’s neck soreness.

New York Mets news hasn’t been overly positive in recent days. Lucas Duda was lost earlier in the week with a stress fracture in his back, and now they could be without another main contributor. Third baseman and captain David Wright is now dealing with a neck injury, adding to his already lengthy list of injuries.

Wright has been dealing with a chronic condition in his back, spinal stenosis, all season. It will be something he has to deal with probably for the remainder of his career, and he will have to learn how to handle it. In addition to the back problem, Wright has also dealt with shoulder pain this season, which the Mets believe is as a result of him having to change his throwing motion to compensate for his back.

Now Wright is dealing with another injury, as his neck has been in discomfort for a couple of days. The team and Wright are still waiting to see exactly what is wrong, as he continues to go for evaluations with doctors.

While they do not know exactly what is causing the pain currently, one thing we do know is that Wright won’t be playing for the next couple of days. After missing the weekend against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Wright will miss at least Monday’s game against the Chicago White Sox, and potentially more.

Manager Terry Collins said that Wright has received some anti-inflammatory medicine that requires at least 48-hours to take their full effect. Until then, he will remain unavailable to play.

“He’s feeling a little better today (Sunday) — which they thought that would happen,” Collins said. “They said really we need 48 hours to see how much it takes effect. At the end of 48 hours they’re going to re-examine him to see what the next step would be.” Collins adds that the neck injury probably stems from the shoulder soreness he was dealing with, saying, “They kind of go hand in hand.”

This is poor timing for Wright and the Mets, as he was starting to get things going at the plate. Prior to missing the weekend, Wright had hit a home run in three consecutive games, all Mets victories.

“He knows how important he is, especially the way he’s been swinging lately,” Collins said. “This thing just popped up. I told him, ‘Listen, it’s just another something we’ve got to get through. But we’ve got to do it right and we’ve got to make sure that we get it out so it doesn’t keep recurring.’ So we’re hoping that tomorrow when he wakes up he’s feeling a whole lot better.”

Wright is frustrated by the latest injury, which can be seen as a step backwards for the third baseman. But, Collins said that he is taking it in stride, and has handled all of the adversity well.

“He’s the best,” Collins said in reference to Wright. “Major league players, they’ve got great pride. Make no mistake about it. They play because they’ve got great confidence. They’ve got great pride in how they play. They don’t like to be embarrassed. And I think this guy has handled it pretty good, because he’s not satisfied with what’s gone on so far.”

It is encouraging to hear that Wright is taking things well, but he would rather be out on the field helping his teammates than sitting in the dugout watching during game days. While Wright has had his fair share of struggles this season, he is probably the best option the Mets have at the hot corner currently as Wilmer Flores and Eric Campbell haven’t done anything to deserve more playing time.
