New York Mets Lose Weekend Series To Los Angeles Dodgers
The New York Mets came just short of defeating Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday night, losing 4-2 after a tough ninth inning.
The New York Mets had a tall task ahead of them on Sunday Night Baseball if they wanted to take the weekend series from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mets would have to defeat Clayton Kershaw, who is in the midst of one of the greatest starts to a season for a starting pitcher in the history of baseball.
When you are facing someone on a historic pace, it will be difficult to pick up a victory, but the Mets did everything they could. Kershaw was his normal dominant self, but the Mets looked like they may get something going early.
Curtis Granderson led off the game with a double to deep center field, getting the Mets off on the right foot. He would not come around to score though, as Kershaw would then retire the next 11 Mets to come to the plate. The next Mets’ base runner would not come until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Neil Walker hit a double with two outs.

Kershaw would continue chugging along until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Mets finally plated a run. Asdrubal Cabrera touched up Kershaw for a solo home run to left field, bringing the Mets to within one run.
The Mets would add another run to Kershaw’s final stat line in the eighth inning, as Curtis Granderson came through with a triple to deep left field off reliever Adam Liberatore. Liberatore was called upon in a double switch with two outs in the eighth inning, as Dave Roberts made a mound visit to Kershaw for the first time this season. It was also the first time this season Kershaw was removed from the game in the middle of an inning, so that is one thing for the Mets to take away from this game.
It was a gift from Roberts, as he made things much easier for the Mets by not having to face Kershaw or Kenley Jansen out of the bullpen. Unfortunately, the Mets wouldn’t keep the game tied for long, as Terry Collins returned the favor and made a peculiar decision of his own.

That peculiar deicsion was bringing Jeurys Familia into the game despite it not being a save situation. We saw the problems that caused Friday, when Familia was called upon to protect a four-run lead and imploded by blowing the lead.
It was much of the same Sunday, as Familia surrendered two runs to give up the lead. Adrian Gonzalez got to Familia, as he hit a two-run single with the bases loaded. That gave Gonzalez four hits in his career against Familia in six career at-bats against him.
Jansen would enter the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and shut the door on the Mets who went quietly resulting in a 4-2 loss.
