The New York Mets blew a lead in the ninth inning, but Curtis Granderson came through in the bottom half, launching a walk-off homer to send everyone home happy.

The New York Mets looked like they were going to get the weekend off to a great start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They are celebrating the 1986 World Series team this weekend, and the Dodgers top pitching prospect, Julio Urias, was making his major league debut.

The Mets were able to handle the hoopla of Urias, chasing him from the game very early. They made the 19-year old work in his debut, as he last only 2 2/3 innings, needing 81 pitches to do so. Urias was probably a little nervous making his debut against the reigning National League champs, as he was erratic on the mound.

Urias was lights out with Triple-A Oklahoma City, going 4-1 in eight appearances, striking out 44 players to only eight walk in 41 innings pitched. That composure wasn’t there tonight, as Urias walked four Mets and allowed five hits in his debut, allowing three runs and striking out three.

All of the scoring damage came in the first inning, as Neil Walker hit a deep double to left field to score Asdrubal Cabrera for the first run. Juan Lagares would follow that up with a single, scoring Walker and Yoenis Cespedes.

With the left-handed Urias starting, the Mets inserted Lagares into the lineup and it was a good idea. Lagares would add a home run in the fifth inning, which gave the Mets a 5-1 lead; David Wright hit a home run the inning before to make it 4-1.

With a 5-1 lead, manager Terry Collins made a peculiar decision, going to closer Jeurys Familia despite it not being a save situation. That move would backfire, as Familia imploded.

Familia allowed five base runners, giving up four hits and one walk. The big blow came courtesy of public enemy No.1, Chase Utley. Utley hit a bases clearing double to tie the game up at five, following a bases loaded walk by Yasmani Grandal earlier in the inning.

While the performance does not snap Familia’s saves streak, as it was a non-save situation, it is the first time that he surrendered multiple runs in a game this season, and the first time since September 23rd, 2015.

But, Familia was picked up by Curtis Granderson, who led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk-off solo home run to send the packed house at Citi Field home happy with a 6-5 Mets victory. Granderson has found his power stroke recently, as he has hit three home runs in his last 10 games.

The Mets will look to carry over the momentum from tonight’s win into tomorrow night’s game. It will be a rematch from a little over two weeks ago, as Noah Syndergaard will be opposed by Kenta Maeda.
