The New York Knicks are heading into a very important offseason. They are in the midst of looking for a new head coach, and could really use an infusion of talent once again. Without a pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, the Knicks will have to rely on free agency to add that talent as they will not be getting a prospect the level of Kristaps Porzingis, or even Jerian Grant for that matter, as they did last season.

Last season the Knicks came away with a solid, yet unspectacular free agent class depending on who you ask. Robin Lopez should be considered a success, and the same goes for Derrick Williams to a degree. But Arron Afflalo, Kevin Seraphin and Kyle O’Quinn would probably be considered failures to varying degrees.

Of those five players, only Lopez and O’Quinn are guaranteed to be back, as they signed four-year deals. Seraphin was on a one year contract and will probably try the open market again, while Williams and Afflalo have player options they will probably decline with the salary cap rising and more money to be had for players.

While the Knicks did not hit on all of those free agents, the one common denominator they have is that they were not considered top flight free agents. The Knicks struck out on the higher ranked free agents such as Marc Gasol, LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Monroe or Paul Millsap. But, with the position that the Knicks were in it is tough to imagine any top free agent realistically considering the Knicks.

While the team is improved with a better stable of talent, there is still some work to do in terms of building a team and adding talent. That could turn off some of the top free agents from considering the Knicks as the next place to play at, but what better time to conjure up a better future roster for the Knicks than heading into free agency?
