Recent Brooklyn News revolves around the coaching staff, as the Nets announced that Jacque Vaughn was hired as the lead assistant for the team.

Recent Brooklyn Nets news involves the coaching staff, as the Nets are moving quickly to fill it out. After naming Atlanta Hawks’ assistant coach Kenny Atkinson their head coach, they are now filling out the remainder of the staff behind him.

The first person that has been named is former Orlando Magic head coach Jacque Vaughn. Vaughn is joining the Nets’ staff as their lead assistant according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical. Vaugh is someone that the Nets have some familiarity with, so the match makes some sense.

More from Brooklyn Nets

Vaughn played for the Nets when the team was still in New Jersey, playing two seasons with the team in 2004-05 and 2005-06. He played in 151 games those two seasons with the Nets, starting 40 of them. Vaughn played 12 years in the NBA before moving on to the coaching ranks.

Vaughn began his coaching career on the San Antonio Spurs bench alongside Gregg Popovich as an assistant. He was then hired by the Orlando Magic, where he coached a little more than two and a half seasons, but with little success. In 216 games, Vaughn compiled a record of 58-158 before being fired 52 games into the 2014-15 season.

Despite the lack of success with the Magic, Vaughn is close with someone high up in the Nets organization in Sean Marks. The Nets new general manager worked closely with Vaughn during the 2015-16 season before being named the Nets’ general manager, as Marks was in their front office and Vaughn was the pro personnel director. The two worked closely together, and have previous experience beyond just this past season being with the Spurs organization.

The hiring of Vaughn is important, even if he is just an assistant. It shows that the Nets are trying to change the culture of their team, and put together a strong supporting cast on the bench. Having a coaching staff in place is important as the Nets head into an important summer with some money to spend.

It is important to know who will be on the sideline, as players want to know what kind of coaching style they may be playing with if they sign with a particular team. We have already seen the effect of that, as the Atkinson hiring has already drawn rave reviews around the league from a number of people.

The Nets are hoping those reviews come to fruition, as the Nets are looking to turn things around on the court after a poor 2015-16 season that saw the team miss the playoffs for the first time this season since moving to Brooklyn prior to the 2012-13 season.
