New York Jets Select OLB Jordan Jenkins 83rd Overall
The New York Jets landed the type of linebacker they were missing, selecting outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins with the 83rd overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
The New York Jets added some much needed help to their linebacker spot, selecting outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins out of Georgia with the 83rd overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Jenkins fills a need for the Jets on the edge, as the outlook at linebacker is looking much better currently for the Jets than it did on Wednesday, as Jenkins will join first round pick Darron Lee at linebacker for the Jets.
In Jenkins the Jets are getting someone who is able to set the edge in the run game. He is a physical player, which helps make up for his lack of athleticism on the edge. He is a reliable tackler and strong at the point of attack, with enough power to knock back runners every now and then. He could be exposed sometimes in space, but overall will make the play when need be.
If team’s are going to attempt to block him with a tight end, he will dominate. He has big, heavy hands that he uses to his advantage, with long arms. He has the strength and size to handle himself against some offensive tackles as well setting the edge when opponents are running towards him.
He also has the intangibles to be an useful pass rusher. Once again his success is predicated on his power in the pass rush, as he will not win many fights against blockers by using his speed. But, he brings effort relentlessly, which helps make up for wherever he is lacking.

While Jenkins calling card will be his ability to play against the run, he can also provide some production from that side of the field as a pass rusher. His effort level, which comes from a military background, helps him immensely as he brings it on every play that he is on the field.
He is a perfect fit for the Jets, as they were lacking anyone to truly set the edge on the outside. Lorenzo Mauldin can play the pass rushing role in the Jets 3-4 defense, with Jenkins playing the other side as the edge setter against the run and Lee playing sideline to sideline in the middle with his athleticism.

Linebacker was a big need for the Jets coming into the draft, as they had to get younger and add some overall speed and athleticism to the position, and they have done that successful first with Lee and now with Jenkins.
