Recent New York Mets news was not positive, as starting catcher Travis d’Arnaud had been placed on the 15-day DL.

New York Mets news was not positive on Tuesday, as starting catcher Travis d’Arnaud was placed on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. d’Arnaud first experienced soreness on Monday during the Mets’ victory over the Cincinnati Reds, and the Mets did not waste any time as d’Arnaud was placed on the 15-day DL less than 24 hours later.

Monday was the first time that d’Arnaud experienced the pain, as it came during one of the five attempted steals that the Reds had. He was seen wincing during his at-bat in the sixth inning as well, but remained in the game for two more innings before being pulled after the eighth inning. d’Arnaud met with team doctors in the dugout during the game, but it was revealed after some tests that d’Arnaud is dealing with a strained rotator cuff.

Taking his spot on the 25-man roster will be veteran Rene Rivera. The Mets signed Rivera on April 5th after the Tampa Bay Rays released him and they were disappointed with the performance of their own catching depth.

To make room for Rivera on the 40-man roster, the Mets moved Zack Wheeler to the 60-day DL, a semantics move just to make room on the roster as Wheeler isn’t expected to be ready to rejoin the team until July 1st.

d’Arnaud does not sound overly concerned about the injury, saying, “I know it’s a strain. I don’t really know a timeline, but I should be back pretty soon. I think it’ll heal very quickly.”

The Mets are hoping that he is right, as d’Arnaud has been hampered by injuries throughout his career, sometimes not coming back as quickly as originally anticipated. He played in only 67 games last season after fracturing his pinkie and straining his left elbow as well. In 2014, he played in only 108 games.

With d’Arnaud sidelined for at least the next two weeks, expect Kevin Plawecki to take over as the starter. While no likes injuries, especially to teammates, Plawecki has a golden opportunity ahead of him. As the clear-cut starter for the next two weeks, Plawecki has a chance to show Terry Collins that he can hit at the major league level. His defense has never been questioned, but the bat has not come along with him from Triple-A yet.

The Mets are hoping that Plawecki can put it together at the plate as well, as he is set to be their starting backstop until d’Arnaud is able to return from his rotator cuff strain.
