New York Mets news is not positive, as it Travis d’Arnaud is set to undergo tests on his ailing throwing shoulder.

The latest New York Mets news is kind of concerning, as another injury has arose. Yoenis Cespedes is currently day-to-day with bruising and swelling in his leg that required draining. He may now be joined on the sidelines for the time being by starting catcher Travis d’Arnaud.

d’Arnaud was forced from the Mets’ 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds Monday night with shoulder soreness. The Reds were trying to take advantage of d’Arnaud behind the plate, as he is not known as a defensive catcher or someone that strikes fear into opponents in the run game.

The Reds attempted five steals against d’Arnaud, and were successful every time. Billy Hamilton got him twice, while Brandon Phillips, Eugenio Suarez and Ivan De Jesus got him once apiece.

d’Arnaud said that the problem arose on Monday, but did not say on which steal attempt that he began feeling the pain. He was saw grimacing during his at-bat in the sixth inning, but was able to stay in the game for two more innings before being pulled.

“I felt it bark up. So I decided to say something. We’ll find out more about what’s going on with it tomorrow,” d’Arnaud said. d’Arnaud is set to undergo a full litany of tests on Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He had some tests with Mets’ doctors at Citi Field after being removed from the game, but more testing needs to be done.

“He’s got a bad shoulder from throwing,” manager Terry Collins said. “That’s what we’re concerned about. Any time you talk about a shoulder problem with a catcher, that’s a problem.” The Mets are taking no chances with the injury, as they have already put the wheels in motion in case d’Arnaud is sidelined for a period of time.

While Kevin Plawecki will probably take over as the main backstop until d’Arnaud returns, the Mets have already called up Reve Rivera from Triple-A Las Vegas to back him up. The Mets had been looking for backup catching depth throughout the spring because they were not pleased with how Johnny Monell was playing. As a result, Rivera was signed on April 5th after he was released by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rivera has 913 at-bats in the major leagues over parts of seven seasons with the Rays, San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners. He will more than likely backup Plawecki for however long that d’Arnaud is sidelined. In his career, Rivera has 20 home runs and 92 RBI, slashing .211/.258/.331.

While losing a starting catcher is never a good thing, it is unfortunately something the Mets can weather as it has happened so often. d’Arnaud played in only 67 games last season and 108 in 2014. He has suffered a multitude of injuries, albeit some fluky ones, but he has missed a lot of time because of them regardless. He is now staring down another absence
