The New York Mets are struggling to hit to start the season, but that doesn’t mean that it should be time to panic after five games.

Through five games, the Mets are 2-3 after a very disappointing series against the Philadelphia Phillies at home. The most concerning moment of the young season for the Mets was the shutout loss in the second game of the series against the Phillies. The lack of offense is something that Mets fans were used to from the first half of last season, but this lineup is much better than the ones the Mets were using before the trade deadline last season.

“I see us chasing a lot of pitches,” manager Terry Collins said to Maria Guardado of NJ.com. “But the ones we’re getting, we’re not hitting. We’ve actually had some very, very good at-bats and gotten ourselves in some very, very good counts to hit, and we’re getting jammed or we’re hitting it off the end. Even though the at-bats are pretty good, we’re just not getting the barrel of the ball, and therefore, we’re not doing any damage.”

One of the players that have taken some heat early on this season is Yoenis Cespedes, but he was able to get the monkey off his back on Sunday with a two-run home run.

“He’s going to be fine,” Collins said to Guardado. “I realize there’s always panic and drama here, comes with the territory of being in this town, but he’s going to be fine… I think once we get a little more of a routine, I think he’ll be okay.”

Another player that will be under the microscope for the Mets is David Wright, who is going to be battling his spinal stenosis for the rest of his career.

“We’d like to be 3-2 rather than 2-3, but we got a long way to prove ourselves to make sure that we make the small things and start winning some of these close games rather than losing them,” Wright said to Guardado. “If we get this going in the direction that I think we’re capable of, and if you look at the back of these guys’ baseball cards, I don’t think anybody in here should feel too worried at this moment. But at the same time, let’s win some games so we don’t have to continuously keep talking about it.”

The Mets are using Wright in the two-hole as of now, which is an important spot in the lineup that will need production. Wright currently has two doubles on the season, but also has more strikeouts than hits to start the season.

While the Mets lineup hasn’t gotten off to the start they would like, it is still extremely early in the season. The production of Wright in the two-hole, however, will have to be monitored, as the Mets can’t afford to have him not produce that high in the lineup.
