The New York Knicks will be hosting the Sacramento Kings and Rajon Rondo Sunday, which gave the mercurial point guard a chance to respond to quotes from earlier in the season.

The New York Knicks have failed in their quest to land a point guard to upgrade their roster. They were unable to make a trade at the NBA Deadline, and 10-day contracts have not brought much in the way of production either. They will have to wait until the summer to fix their problems, and one of the players they are expected to check in on is Sacramento Kings’ point guard Rajon Rondo.

Rondo and the Kings are making their lone visit to Madison Square Garden tonight, so fans will have a first hand look at what Rondo can bring to the court as a leader and maestro offensively. Despite playing on the opposite coast of the country, Rondo has been a topic of discussion at times this season for the Knicks.

Outside of his impending free agency, former head coach Derek Fisher had some choice words for Rondo earlier in the season. Fisher was critical of how Rondo would fit into a triangle offense given his shortcomings at times shooting the ball. While Rondo isn’t the best shooter, this is no doubting what Rondo would bring to the table with his ability to orchestrate an offense and break down opposing defenses; Rondo currently leads the NBA in assists per game at 11.9 per game.

Back in February this war of words began because Rondo said that the trianlge wasn’t the best look for him. Fisher then responded, saying, “You can’t ask a guy that wasn’t very successful playing against it whether or not he wants to come play in it.”

Despite Fisher no longer being the head coach of the Knicks, Rondo was still asked about what was said and offered another response today when talking to reporters. “He might have blacked out a couple of times (when) we beat their a– in ’08. They got us back in ’10. He just might’ve had a moment where he was a little frustrated with my comment.” Rondo also said, “He didn’t really honestly probably think about what he said, obviously. But he has his own opinion. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion and I stated mine a couple months back about it.”

While Fisher may not have been a big fan of Rondo’s game, interim head coach Kurt Rambis reportedly is. He is high on Rondo’s game according to sources, and for good reason.

Despite the first comments he made giving the impression that the Knicks weren’t a team he would consider this offseason, Rondo seemed more high on them Sunday. “I think it’s effective. I think it’s great for team chemistry,” Rondo said. “Then when the ball gets moving, everyone touches the ball and you get a feel for it. The great Tommy Heinsohn (Celtics player, coach and broadcaster) told me that.

While Rondo does not seem like a quintessential fit for the Triangle Offense, he would undoubtedly be an upgrade for the Knicks as they need to hit it big this summer or else Carmelo Anthony could start trying to force his way out of town.
