New York Giants Rumors: Could the Giants sign Cleveland Browns’ free agent safety Tashaun Gipson? Rumors are he is open to signing with the team.

The New York Giants‘ defense was a disaster for a majority of the 2015 season. It was a major reason for the team failing to make the postseason for a fourth consecutive season, the second of which they went 6-10 during. One area that the Giants need to upgrade this offseason is the safety position.

Last season they over valued what they had and underestimated the need for one. After striking out on the top target in Devin McCourty, the Giants still decided to not retain anyone from 2014. Antrel Rolle was able to talk as a free agent, as well as Quintin Demps and Stevie Brown. The Giants decided to count on younger players such as Nat Behre, Cooper Taylor and rookie Landon Collins.

That plan backfired almost immediately, as the Giants couldn’t even get out of training camp without their already thin safety depth chart getting decimated by injuries. Bennett Jackson and Mykkele Thompson were lost for the season, while Behre and Taylor were also injured for long periods of time. That forced the Giants to sign veterans such as Brandon Meriweather and Craig Dahl, who brought some experience to the position but left much to be desired.

Collins showed some in his rookie year, but was asked to do a lot for a rookie without much help around him. Collins is best when allowed to play in the box closer against the line of scrimmage and against the run. The problem was every safety the Giants had seemed to be better at that, so someone had to play the centerfield role and it was Collins.

Collins was exposed, so adding a play making ball hawk type next to him would be a smart way for general manager Jerry Reese to spend some of his money. One player that could fit that bill is Cleveland Browns free agent safety Tashaun Gipson, whom NJ.com’s Jordan Raanan hears is interested in playing for the Giants.

Gipson is coming off an injury plagued season, but would be a great fit in the Giants’ secondary. His ball hawking abilities would pair nicely with Collins, giving the Giants a real strong safety/free safety combo they were never able to find last season.

Becuase of the less productive season than in years past, the Giants could probably get Gipson relatively cheap. He would represent a huge upgrade for them at safety, and is someone they should strongly consider signing. Money isn’t a problem for the Giants this offseason, but signing Gipson for a relatively low number would allow them to add more talent at other positions.

Prior to the injury-riddled 2015, Gipson had five and six interceptions in 2013 and 2014, scoring a touchdown in each season. He also added 12 passes defended in 2013 and eight in 2014. It is the type of production the Giants desperately need in their secondary as they cannot afford to be as quiet signing players as they were last season.
