New York Yankees Rumors: Is Aroldis Chapman going to be suspended for his offseason incident? It is looking that way according to some sources.

It was an interesting offseason for the New York Yankees, as they were the only team that did not hand out a major league contract during free agency. They decided instead to add talent via the trade market, acquiring Aaron Hicks from the Minnesota Twins and Aroldis Chapman from the Cinncinati Reds. There is a chance that the Yankees will not have Chapman at their disposal though once the regular season begins.

Chapman got into some hot water during the offseason as a domestic abuse incident was reported at his home. Chapman allegedly chokes his girlfriend, Cristina Barnea, and gunshots were fired at his home. Despite no charges being filed against Chapman, there had been rumors swirling that he could face a suspension from MLB for the incident.

It seems that those rumors were correct, as Chapman looks like he will be suspended in the coming days. The news was first reported by Jon Heyman, who sent out the information via his Twitter account.

Despite there being a lot of inconsistencies in the story, and no cooperating witnesses as Heyman mentions, it looks as if Chapman will receive some sort of ban from Major League Baseball. MLB has new disciplinary measures for anyone involved in domestic violence problems, and it looks like Chapman will be the first person to handed a ban accordingly.

Chapman’s camp has said any ban given to their player will be appealed, so even if a suspension is handed down soon, this is something that will probably drag on for some time. It will be a big decision either way, as Chapman stands to loose out on more than game checks if the suspension is a lengthy one.

Champan currently has five years and 34 days of MLB service time, with six years needed to become a free agent. Needing 138 more days, if Chapman is suspended for a period of time that is longer than 45 days, Chapman will fall short of the mandatory six years of service time to become a free agent. If that happens, you can be sure that Chapman’s agents and representatives would fight the ban hard during the appeal process.

This could be the first suspension handed down under the new domestic violence policy. Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes could also be suspended, but he has been placed on paid leave as the MLB continues to investigate his domestic violence incident from the offseason.
