New York Mets News: Shortstop Gavin Cecchini, one of the Mets top prospects, received a cortisone shot for his ailing left shoulder and will be sidelined for about a week.

New York Mets have gotten their 2016 Spring Training underway as they look to build off their successful 2015 season. They will be taking things very slow in the early going, as they do not want anyone getting injured in the early going. We already saw it with starting pitcher Jacob deGrom.

deGrom experienced some pain in his thigh earlier in the week while running and was held off the mound for a couple of days as a result. The injury turned out to not be serious at all, as deGrom returned to the mound today to resume his activities.

deGrom isn’t the only Mets player to be experiencing some pain in the early going of Spring Training, as one of their top prospects, shortstop Gavin Cecchini, will also be sidelined for a couple of days. According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Cecchini was given a cortisone shot today to help deal with some inflammation in his left shoulder. Rubin continues to say that the team expects Cecchini to be back on the field in about a week.

The Mets will assuredly take things slowly with Cecchini, as he is one of their better young players and it is an injury that he has been dealing with for quite some time. Cecchini was able to play in only four games at the Arizona Fall League because of a strained shoulder, subsequently being shut down. Because of the injury, Cecchini also missed out on Premier 12 Tournament in Asia, where some of the best young players from around the world gather to play.

This early in the process there is no reason to push a player, as the Mets have big plans for Cecchini in the future. But, his role for this season is probably set in place already as the Mets made major additions in the middle infield.

With the trade for Neil Walker and signing of Asdrubal Cabrera, the Mets do not have a current need for Cecchini on the major league club. They also have Wilmer Flores on the bench and Ruben Tejada still on the roster, so Cecchini will spend a majority of the season in Triple-A Las Vegas unless an injury occurs.

Next: What was the biggest trade made by the Mets in the last 20 years?

Cecchini, who was the 12th overall pick from 2012, had a strong season at Double-A Binghamton last season, slashing .317/.377/.442; he should be able to keep those numbers, if not increase them, in the friendly hitter’s park of Las Vegas and the Pacific Coast League.
