The New York Knicks officially signed guard Jimmer Fredette to a 10-day contract today, and he will be active tonight against the Toronto Raptors.

The New York Knicks were quiet at the trade deadline, remaining out of the action and not making any deals. They went in with a clear plan of upgrading the point guard position, but did not like any of the deals that were given to them. There were rumors that the Knicks could have landed Patrick Beverley from the Houston Rockets, but reportedly decided the package the Rockets asked for was too much.

With the trade deadline now expired, the Knicks went a different route in finding a point guard. It was expected that they were going to sign Jimmer Fredette late last week, and that move as now become official. Fredette was signed by the Knicks to a 10-day contract today, as he is now officially a member of the New York Knicks.

The move became official this afternoon, as the Knicks announced the move in the afternoon.

More from Empire Writes Back

Fredette will be available right away for the Knicks, as he will be active tonight against the Toronto Raptors. Lou Amundson and Cleanthony Early will be the inactive players for the Knicks. But, there is no guarantee that he will see the court for an extended period of time, if at all.

During his press conference today, Kurt Rambis made it clear that Fredette would not be handed anything, and that he will have to earn his minutes. Rambis said that he will have to outplay someone already on the club if he is to stick around past the 10 days of this contract. He also added that it will not be an easy task.

Fredette will have an opportunity to showcase his talents and worth to the team, as the Knicks have a relatively busy schedule in the next 10 days. The Knicks will be playing five games during the course of Fredette’s contract with four games at Madison Square Garden against the Raptors, Orlando Magic, Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers, and one road game against the Indiana Pacers.

Fredette took to Twitter to express his feelings about being signed by the Knicks, as he is thankful to have another opportunity at the NBA level.

The Knicks have been looking for a spark at the point guard position and Fredette could deliver that. He will probably have to fight for minutes behind Jose Calderon with Langston Galloway, Sasha Vujacic and Jerian Grant, which is a tall task. But, one thing that he can bring the Knicks right away is a knock-down three-point shooter.

Fredette was making 40.5 percent of his three-pointers in the D-League this season, and is a 38 percent shooter in his career in the NBA. The Knicks would be happy with either number, as they are making only 33.6 percent of their three-point attempts this season.
