New York Knicks Rumors: The Knicks did not add the point guard they had hoped to at the trade deadline, but that does not mean it was quiet as the Houston Rockets supposedly proposed a deal.

It was no secret that the New York Knicks headed into the NBA Trade Deadline with one goal in mind; upgrading their point guard position. It has been an area of concern for the Knicks in recent weeks, but armed with very little in the way of assets Phil Jackson knew it would be difficult to pull off a trade.

The Knicks were supposedly dangling Jose Calderon and trying to talk up his leadership and veteran qualities that he would bring to a new. To sweeten the deal, the Knicks were willing to part with seldom used big man Kyle O’Quinn, and there were some rumors earlier in the afternoon that the Knicks were getting calls gauging the interest in trading the rights to 2015 second round draft pick, and friend of Kristaps Porzingis, Guillermo Hernangomez.

But, the trade deadline came and went without much buzz from the Knicks. They decided that there were no deals worth making that would upgrade their team enough to help make a playoff push for this season. But, it was not without some trades being worked on.

According to Michael Scotto of Sheridan Hoops and Associated Press, the Knicks had a real chance at acquiring Houston Rockets’ point guard Patrick Beverley. The Knicks were supposedly monitoring the Rockets backup point guard Ty Lawson, but the Rockets made an offer involving their starting point guard. But, the Knicks were not interested according to Scotto, and declined the offer.

In the past, it is hard to imagine that the Knicks would have turned down a trade like that. Beverley is regarded as one of the better defensive point guards in the NBA, which is what the Knicks are missing. Also, he can knock down a jump shot, making 40.3 percent of his three-point attempts this season.

There is no word on who the two rotation players would have been, but the hold up in the deal was probably the first round pick. Under Jackson, the Knicks have taken a different philosophy when making trades, as he has acquired them more than traded them, which is not normally the Knicks’ MO.

Also, if the rotation players weren’t Calderon and O’Quinn, the Knicks would be eating into their future cap space, something Jackson has been reluctant to do as he wants the Knicks to be as big of players as possible in free agency this summer and summers to come.

While Beverley would technically be an upgrade over what the Knicks currently have at point guard, it can be argued that he would not be a difference maker in the same light as if the Knicks acquired someone such as Jeff Teague or Mike Conley. Beverley wouldn’t have moved the Knicks meter much this season in a playoff push, and trading away two rotation players and first round draft pick for him wouldn’t have netted the results the Knicks want.

It was a smart decision to decline the trade, as the Knicks still have an open roster spot  on their roster. They can add a player into that spot as they wait and see what the waiver wire will look like once some veterans are bought out. There are some other players they could look into adding as well, such as NBA D-League All-Star Game MVP Jimmer Fredette, who is on the Knicks’ own D-League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks.
