As stated in the press conference following Tom Coughlin’s resignation, co-owner John Mara expressed his intent on interviewing both coordinators, McAdoo and Steve Spagnuolo, to determine if one can become the next head coach.

During Tuesday’s press conference, Mara spoke about the state of the franchise, and what needs improvement. A large portion of the conference was spent bashing the personnel and lack of talent on the roster. Mara detailed how recent draft classes have not been contributing the way they would have liked them to, and mentioned that other than a handful of players, many of the draft picks have been busts/bad.

From Mara’s statements, one would assume that general manager Jerry Reese would be fired, because he is directly responsible for all of the bad rosters. Instead, Mara contradicted himself multiple times and said that he would give Reese another chance to fix the problems. Tom Coughlin didn’t get the same blame or second chance from Mara, and was the odd man out (age has a large part in this).

Mara also stated that in his search for the new head coach, he would be looking for the right man for the job. He would start by interviewing both coordinators, as well as other potential candidates. Until now, many reports have mentioned that the Giants are interviewing/have interviewed McAdoo, Spagnuolo, Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, and former Bills coach Doug Marrone, among others.

It looks like Mara already has his mind made up about the choice for new head coach (maybe even as far back as two years ago), and we will see soon when the Giants make the announcement official. Right now, it’s pure speculation, but all indications are that McAdoo will be promoted.

The Giants are known to hire head coaches who have ties to the organization, and McAdoo fits the bill, having served as offensive coordinator for the past two years. Mara has also publicly stated that he wished McAdoo and Spags would return next year, though the final decision rests on the new head coach. Hiring McAdoo or Spags would allow for the other to remain as coordinator, and would maintain stability within the coaching staff. I don’t see them promoting Spags, due to his failure with the Rams and instead could be looking at McAdoo’s “potential”, because none of us knows what type of head coach he can be.

The Giants could be facing some pressure with the division-rival Eagles interviewing McAdoo as well, and may feel that he could leave to his home state. I hope the Giants don’t rush and sign him just so other teams don’t sign him first, because it’s more important for the Giants to get the right man for the job, rather than overthinking themselves.

Another reason that McAdoo could assume the job is because of the greater flexibility of front office change it could provide. Mara’s comments on Monday could be interpreted that if the Giants don’t have a good offseason, Reese will be on the hot seat and could be gone next year. If Reese is gone, the new GM might want to bring in his own head coach.

If the Giants hired an internal coach this year, it would be much easier to fire him next year compared to a new coach after just one year. McAdoo being promoted would reduce some chaos when he’s fired next year, if the Giants don’t perform well. I sense that Mara now views the team on a year-to-year basis, so a fresh start next year would not surprise me.

McAdoo was hand-picked by John Mara himself, and does not have the resume other coaching candidates have. Let’s take a look at his competition as of now.
