New York Giants News: Two more Giants were placed on IR this week, as Larry Donnell and Zak DeOssie joined an already extensive IR list of 12 players.

The New York Giants have been crushed by injuries this season all over the roster. They had already placed 12 players on injured reserve coming into this week, headlined by Victor Cruz, Jon Beason, Johnathan Hankins and Geoff Schwartz.

Now they will be adding two more players to that list, important in their own ways, as starting tight end Larry Donnell and long snapper Zak DeOssie were placed on IR earlier this week.

These are injuries that will put the Giants deeper in a hole. Donnell is the second tight end to end up on IR for the Giants this season, as his backup, Daniel Fells, was placed on IR earlier in the season with a staph infection that nearly cost him his foot. His football career is probably over.

Donnell will be placed on IR because of a neck injury. He suffered the injury against the New Orleans Saints in Week 8 and hasn’t been on the field since. Rookie Will Tye of Stonybrook University has played well in his place, and should continue splitting time with Jared Cunningham.

With a neck injury the Giants and Donnell are not going to take any chances, so it comes as little surprise that he was placed on season-ending IR as the only way for him to recover from his injury is rest.

What does come as a surprise is that DeOssie was placed on season-ending IR. DeOssie had not yet missed a game in his eight-year career, which speaks volumes not only to his health but the standing he has in the organization as more often than not many fans do not know who their team’s long snapper is unless they are messing something up. He had played in 140 consecutive game, which is only topped by Eli Manning on the Giants.

DeOssie was able to play through the game this past week against the New York Jets, but had torn ligaments in his wrist that doctors recommended he get fixed right away with surgery. This is a big blow for the Giants, as they had a multitude of problems to deal with already and adding a new long snapper to that list will not help.

The Giants signed Danny Aiken, formerly of the New England Patriots to take his place. He will have to get up to speed quick and build a repoire with Brad Wing quick as the Giants special teams have been solid thus far this season; seeing an injury to the long snapper torpedo that would be disappointing.

Both players will be missed as the Giants make a last ditch effort for a postseason spot in the coming weeks.
