New York Giants News: Offensive Guard Geoff Schwartz had his season ended, as he was placed on season-ending IR.

The New York Giants have been ravaged by injuries since March when Will Beatty went down with a torn pectoral lifting weights. The Giants were able to patch the offensive line together throughout the season and were having some success. But, things have gotten worse for the Giants as they have continued to see injuries occur to the interior of their offensive line.

Justin Pugh was unable to play against the New England Patriots because he had reoccuring issues of post-concussion syndrome. He was unable to play against the Washington Redskins this past week, and was joined on the sideline by center Weston Richburg, who sprained his ankle against the Patriots.

Now, the Giants will be adding another person to the sidelines, as guard Geoff Schwartz will be sidelined with broken leg suffered against the Redskins when someone rolled up on his leg. Schwartz had been strong for the Giants this season, and his injury will be a big blow to a team already dealing with injuries to their better offensive lineman.

The Giants are now looking at their whole interior line being out for Week 13, as Pugh and Richburg’s status are still up in the air. This could spell trouble for the Giants, who have been struggling to protect Eli Manning in recent weeks with the constantly changing offensive line combinations. Opening holes in the running game has been a struggle all season, so losing another starter will not help get that going.

With Schwartz sidelined, the Giants made a corresponding move by signing Adam Gettis off the Oakland Raiders’ practice squad. Gettis is someone the team is familiar with, as he was signed to the 53-man roster at the end of 2014, and was with the team throughout training camp and the preseason. He saw some time with the first team, and his signing makes sense. He could probably step into playing time if needed as he should have some knowledge of the offense already from his time with the team over the summer.

Gettis has a chance to play this upcoming week, as the Giants offensive line was rather poor throughout the game against the Redskins. He could be given a chance to show what he can do, as he can’t really do any worse than what the Giants were getting recently.

It is a big blow for the Giants, as this makes it two out of two seasons that Schwartz will end on season-ending IR with Big Blue. There was thought to be a chance that he would be able to return, but head coach Tom Coughlin shot that down early, and the team decided to place him on IR.

The Giants offenisve line looked like it could be a strength of the team coming into the season, but the projected lineup of Beatty, Pugh, Richburg, Schwartz and rookie Ereck Flowers will not be what the group looks like at all this Sunday against the New York Jets.
