New York Mets Rumors: Could the Mets make another run at super utility man Ben Zobrist as a free agent after missing out on acquiring him at the trade deadline?

The New York Mets came a couple of breaks away from being the 2015 World Series champions. Now they will look to improve their roster during the MLB Hot Stove season to ensure that they not only return, but improve their chances of taking home the championship this time. Could one of their improvements include a member of the winning team, the Kansas City Royals, switching sides?

The Mets are staring down the loss of a lot of offense with Daniel Murphy and Yoenis Cespedes both free agents and looking like they will move on. There are a number of options that the Mets could look to fill in those holes. One being a player they tried to acquire last season in a trade, and could help fill in multiple spots. The player is none other than super utilityman Ben Zobrist.

It should come as no surprise that Zobrist is a player the Mets would target. His game is perfect for the National League, as his versatility enables him to play all over the field. He could replace Murphy at second base, but also give insurance at third base, shortstop and the corner outfield spots. It would enable Terry Collins to use a number of different lineup combinations, and wouldn’t hurt to keep that extra reliever as Zobrist lengthens the bench by himself. Also, he is a switch hitter so there would be no worries about him in the lineup; he can hit against anyone.

It will not be a cakewalk to acquire Zobrist though. Like last season when they inquired about him in a trade, there will be a lot of competition for Zobrist’s services. Despite being 34-years old and 35 in May, Zobrist has no shortage of suitors that would love to add him to their lineups.

According to the people over at MLBTradeRumors.com, the Mets are currently facing off against the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals to sign Zobrist. Teams such as the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers could also get into the bidding, along with the Royals attempting to retain him.

Despite his age, it will probably take a three-year deal to lock up Zobrist. If a team is willing to give the fourth year, that would probably get him to sign on the dotted line. While he would be a great asset to a team such as the Mets, the age and contract demands might scare them off. After the disaster that Michael Cuddyer has been, the Mets may look to go after younger pieces to fill out their roster instead of aging veterans seemingly near the end of the line.
