New York Mets News: The Mets have begun the house cleaning for the 2016 season, extending a qualifying offer toe Daniel Murphy and removing two players from their 40-man roster.

The New York Mets have begun their housecleaning from the 2015 season to start preparing for the 2016 one. They have already begun making moves on their 40-man roster, and extended a qualifying offer to one of their free agents, guaranteeing them some compensation if he happens to leave.

The player that received the qualifying offer was NLCS hero and World Series goat Daniel Murphy. The qualifying offer is for $15.8 million dollars in 2016, but Murphy will not accept this offer. While Murphy is nowhere near a $15.8 million dollar player, he will be looking to cash in on a multi-year contract this offseason with the NLCS MVP Award being his biggest asset.

Murphy slashed .281/.322/.449 in the regular season with 14 home runs. He really came on during the playoffs prior to the World Series, as he slugged a home run in seven straight games to help get the Mets through the NLDS and NLCS. He will look to cash in, and has probably played his last game in a Mets uniform. There is a good chance that he and Yoenis Cespedes move on from the Mets this offseason, leaving a lot of offensive production leaving the building.

The Mets are more prepared to see Murphy walk though, as they have youngster Dilson Herrera waiting in the wings to take over at second base. He will join a middle infield group that already includes Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada, as the Mets have one of the more questionable projected middle infield groupings heading into the offseason.

One person we know will not be a part of that middle infield rotation, or at least anytime soon, is Wilfredo Tovar. The 24-year old has had two cups of tea with the Mets since being signed as an international free agent in 2007, but has been removed from the 40-man roster. He cleared waivers, and is now a free agent once again, free to sign with any team that he chooses.

He will be joined on the free agent list by Anthony Recker. The 32-year old has lost out in the numbers game for Mets backstops, as the Mets are more than stocked with Travis d’Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki. Recker really struggled this season at the major league level with the bat, but could be decent organizational depth for a team in need of an emergency catcher.

With those moves, the Mets 40-man roster now stands at 38 players. They have added one player to the roster already this offseason in left-handed pitcher Josh Smoker. Smoker has a chance to carve out a role in 2016 with the Mets, as they never found a replacement for lefty Josh Edgin after lefty Jerry Blevins.
