New York Mets World Series MVP Prediction

When we witness greatness we talk about it. Daniel Murphy of the New York Mets has been more than great this postseason; he’s been nearly unstoppable, which is why we can’t stop talking about him. Anyone who has watched the Mets this postseason can clearly say he’s been the biggest reason the Mets are where they are right now: in the World Series. Does that necessarily mean he’s going to step up his play yet again when they need him the most and be the MVP of the World Series?

Let’s just say for a moment that he doesn’t play as well and is far from playing like an MVP. Consider this: the Mets haven’t played since last Wednesday and sometimes that can be an issue for a hitter who was on a roll, but then the suddenly stops playing due to the gap between series. For Murphy, that gap has been almost a week, and that may play a factor in how well he hits, especially at the start of the World Series.

Additionally, Murphy has been so hot with the bat that he might even start to fatigue during the World Series. Yes, he had some time off over the past week to reboot, but when you play a whole regular season and then play even harder and longer in the postseason, sometimes you tucker out. It happens to the best players in sports.

For example, even Lebron James, one of the NBA’s all-time greatest players, had cramps during the NBA Finals in recent years. Fact is, fatigue from a long season and time off between series can throw you off your game. It happens to the best athletes, and it could happen to Murphy.

On the flip side, it’s very difficult to ignore what Murphy has accomplished. He has hit a home run in six consecutive postseason games this year, a MLB postseason record.

Additionally, in nine postseason games according to Baseball-Reference.com he has 16 hits in 38 at-bats , seven of which were home runs, had one walk, scored 11 runs, had 11 RBI, and a .421 batting average. That is pretty incredible when you consider that most of these games have been won with relatively low scoring.

So does that mean he’ll be the MVP of the World Series if the Mets win it? I predict he does and will win MVP and continue his hot and historic play with the bat. The best players usually play up their utmost potential when they are needed the most, and so far Murphy has done that. Therefore there’s no reason to start doubting him now.

Now don’t get me wrong, I know the Kansas City Royals have been here before. They were here in the World Series last year, and look even better this year, especially with their pitching. However, the Mets have played what seems to be even a level above that. Most of that can be attributed to the offensive production of Murphy, who has willed the team to victory after victory.  Without him I don’t think there’s any conceivable way the Mets stun both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs; two teams who had incredible seasons this year.

Everything on the stats sheets points to Murphy as the MVP of this team this postseason and in the World Series. Any Mets fan would probably agree he’s the unanimous pick. However, if you want a dark horse or sleeper pick, I expect David Wright, a player who has struggled in the previous two rounds, to also step up. He has long been one of the Mets best hitters, and there’s no reason why he can’t turn his play around and help the Mets win the World Series. If he does, he might steal MVP honors from Murphy. He did seem to find a small groove at the end of the series against the Cubs. Hopefully he continues to keep that up and do well with the bat like he’s capable of.

It is also tempting to pick Yoenis Cespedes as the MVP in the World Series as well, but I find that unlikely with the sore shoulder he’s been suffering. He has a power bat, but that only matters if you get the hits when you need them most. He has the talent to play like an MVP, but I don’t think this is the time he plays like one. The stats don’t show it and neither has his play this postseason.

Individuals who have MVP performances help teams win championships. You could argue the Mets pitching staff and the team’s overall defense has more than done their job this postseason as well, but let’s be honest. The Mets, if they didn’t score would probably not be where they are today, even with quality pitching. Murphy has provided a lot of that scoring in one way or another and I think he continues to do that in the World Series. My prediction is look for the Daniel Murphy to win MVP if the Mets win it all. After all, no one seems to deserve it more than he does.
