New York Mets: Pitching Rotation for World Series Released

The wait is over. The New York Mets have revealed who they intend to start for their first four games of the World Series versus the Kansas City Royals. Up first, the Mets have decided to go with Matt Harvey as their starter for Game 1 and Jacob deGrom in Game 2. Next up in Game 3 will be Noah Syndergaard, followed by Steven Matz in Game 4.

The decision of who would pitch in the opening two games really came down to the fact that Mets Manager Terry Collins didn’t want his young pitchers Noah Syndergaard, and Steven Matz having to deal with the hard road environment awaiting at Kauffman Stadium, home of the Royals. Instead he wanted to use his No. 1 and No. 2 guys first so that the young pitchers could pitch with confidence in front of their home fans.

Collins also was cautious of using deGrom as his starter in Game 1, mostly because he felt the young pitcher was experiencing fatigue, and the task of playing beyond the regular season was catching up to him. He has struggled to find location with his fastball in recent games leading to quite a few tight spots for the young pitcher. Even though deGrom has pitched spectacularly well, posting a 3-0 record and 1.80 ERA in the postseason, he still felt Harvey would still be the better choice as his Game 1 starter.

Harvey has only played once in each of the first two rounds for the Mets, which has led to 2-0 record and a 2.84 ERA. He has played solid all year and his supposed “pitch count” of sorts has worked well for the Mets so far this postseason as the team has posted a 7-2 record.

Syndergaard, who will pitch Game 3 of the World Series, played well in last Sunday allowing only three hits and one earned run on the way to a Mets 4-1 victory. He has played in three games this postseason, posting a 1-1 record with a 2.77 ERA. The one loss he had he gave up five hits and four walks en route to three earned runs in just over six innings of work against the Los Angeles Dodgers on October 10th. Since then though, he has rebounded with two great performances which led to New York Met wins.

Matz, the starting pitcher for Game 4, has played in two games, but given up four earned runs. He has an ERA of 3.74 and record of 0-1 in the postseason. With this performance and the fact he has barely played more than four innings in his last two starts it makes sense that Collins put him in a position to pitch in front of his home fans. Only 24 years old, a lot rides on his performance in what could be a pivotal Game 4 of the World Series, and putting him in an environment to succeed could pay huge dividends.

Regardless of the youth, the Mets Manager Terry Collins feels very confident in his young pitching staff. “We like going into Kansas City with our Nos. 1 and 2 guys. Noah has pitched great at home. We thought that’s a good mix. And obviously we think Steven Matz showed us, even though it hasn’t been the depth into the games like he’s going to do in the future, for four or five innings he’s been pretty good.”
