New York Jets Fall Short Against New England Patriots

The New York Jets had a great opportunity to pull even with the New England Patriots in the AFC East, but came up short, losing 30-23. It was a hard fought game by the upstart Jets, but the Patriots enforced their will on the Jets with a dominant fourth quarter. The Jets had a chance to try and tie the game at the end, but were called for a penalty as they scrambled to try and spike the ball.

The Jets had a chance to put the pressure on the Patriots about halfway through the fourth quarter, but Brandon Marshall dropped a touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Jets had to settle for a field goal and a four point lead, and the Patriots took advantage right away. The Patriots followed that up with touchdowns on the next two drives to take the lead and put the Jets away.

This was a disappointing outcome from the Jets, as they were in control for most of the game. Despite an early fumble by Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Jets were able to set the pace and hold a lead for most of the game. Fitzpatrick was asked to throw the ball more than people expected though, as he finished the game 21-of-38 for 283 yards. He threw two touchdowns, connecting with Chris Ivory and Jeremy Kerley for touchdowns.

The big problem for the Jets was that they were unable to get much from their run game. Chris Ivory managed only 41 yards on 17 carries as the Patriots made it point to stuff the box and stop the run. Fitzpatrick ran for 29 yards on five carries, while Zac Stacy mixed in for seven carries for 19 yards. Stacy saw an expanded role with Bilal Powell sidelined.

While the Jets run game struggled, they looked like world beaters compared to the Patriots. The Patriots leading rusher was Tom Brady, who gained 15 yards on four carries. LeGarrette Blount carried the ball only three times for negative three yards, while James White received two for four. Dion Lewis was a surprise inactive prior to the game, which changed the Patriots game plan a bit entering the game.

It ended up not mattering much, as the Jets could not stop Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski led the way with 11 receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown. Danny Amendola was the second leading receiver, as the Jets were able to contain Julian Edelman but the other players stepped up. Amendola finished the game with eight receptions for 86 yards and Brady’s second touchdown.

Brady finished the game 34-for-54 for 355 yards and them two touchdowns. He was sacked three times as the Jets were able to get pressure on Brady, but they were not able to contain him enough when it mattered.

The Jets had a good showing today, but we also learned they are not yet on the same level of the Patriots. This was a good learning experience for them, but a disappointing loss as well. When you hold a team to 16 rushing yards, you should win. But, not many teams have a player of the caliber of Brady to pick up the slack.

Next up on the schedule for the Jets is a meeting with Oakland Raiders in the black hole as they make their lone west coast trip of the season.
