Odell Beckham Jr. Trending In Wrong Direction For Week 6

There is no denying the abilities of Odell Beckham Jr. He has quickly ascended up the wide receiver ranks in the NFL, as he is only 17 games into his NFL career but is looked at as one of the top pass catchers in the league. He is an important part of the New York Giants offense, and it would pose a big problem if he was to miss any games. Well, that looks like a possibility for Week 6, as Beckham Jr. is not progressing as the Giants had hoped he would this week at practice.

Tom Coughlin’s rule normally is that if you do not practice, you do not play that week. It would look like Beckham Jr. is trending in that direction, as he has been unable to take the field yet this week in practice with his teammates. He has done some work on the side, but not participating with his teammates is never a good sign.

Friday was the last full practice the Giants will have before their game Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, but there is still a chance for him to show something during their walk through Sunday.

Here is the work that Beckham Jr. did Friday during practice. While it is not a lot, it is still encouraging to see him at least doing something on the field, even if it is just individual work on the side.

The Giants will obviously wait until the last minute to make a decision about Beckham Jr. availability. Week 6 is a huge game against an NFC East rival in the Eagles and not having Beckham Jr. out there would severely hamper the offense. With Victor Cruz already out, and Rueben Randle also battling a hamstring injury, the Giants could be woefully undermanned in an important game.

Eli Manning showed that he can manufacture a drive with backups, as he led most of the fourth quarter comeback with Dwayne Harris as his top receiver with Myles White, who has been with the team a little more than a week, and rookie Geremy Davis. But it would be unrealistic to expect any of that trio to step up and carry a passing offense the way Beckham Jr. and Randle have this season.

If Beckham Jr. is on the field being used only as a decoy that would be a big help for the Giants. As long as he is on the field, the Eagles will have to pay attention to him even if the Giants aren’t planning on throwing him the ball.

This will be something to keep an eye on throughout the weekend as the Giants know how important of a game they have on Monday night, but they also know that there is 10 games left in the season after the one Monday night. Is rushing Beckham Jr. back and risking a worse injury for the remainder of the season worth him gutting out on game in mid-October, even if it is against an NFC East foe? It is hard to say one game means more than 10, but we will see where the Giants are at this weekend leading up to Monday Night.
