Carmelo Anthony: New York Knicks Can Compete

facebooktwitterreddit

Okay, so riddle me this. Carmelo Anthony came out and said the New York Knicks will compete for a championship this year. I had to pause for a moment when I heard that. I was like; okay sure, he’s just being Carmelo Anthony, saying things and then not really meaning them; like what he supposedly said about Kristaps Porzingis when he got drafted. But then I went back and looked at the actual quote.

"“S—, we’re competing. People might not believe that, but we’re definitely competing for that. That’s always going to be the goal. Whether we get there or not depends on us and what we’re doing. That’s always our big-picture goal.”"

I think its pretty clear that Anthony is just trying to say the right things. I think he knows in his heart a team full of just average players can’t win a championship. Just look at the roster: Robin Lopez, Arron Afflalo, Kevin Seraphin, Kyle O’Quinn, Sasha Vujacic, Derrick Williams, Jerian Grant, Lance Thomas, Cleanthony Early, among others. This team is not built to play anywhere near the level of Cleveland or anyone else in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks have a decent team finally again this year, but by no means have a contender for a championship.

Now, I love the Knicks as much as Spike Lee, or maybe even more , but even I know in my heart, as sad as it is to say it, that this isn’t our year unless we have some major changes coming our way.  So I think it’s important that Anthony came out and said the right things first to show his heart belongs to this organization no matter how they play this year.

Secondly, I think he is just plain saying that it is the goal of every NBA team, whether it’s possible or not, to say that they’re goal is to try to win a championship and compete for it as much as they can. In other words, why play if that’s not your main goal? You have to want to play for it: that’s why you play in the league.

I think in his heart Carmelo really wants to back up his words and really compete this year, but I think deep down he also knows it’s probably not a reality. I think he’s classy just for standing up for his team though and at least in the media saying that he believes in this team and that he thinks they can go far. I’m sure it means a lot to his team and Knicks fans too that Carmelo’s heart and mouth is in the right place even when on paper it seems like a pipe dream.

“All right, Knicks fans. What do you think though? Is Carmelo just saying the right things or do you think he is being legitimately honest like Stephen A. of ESPN seems to think?  Leave your comments below.
