Jets vs. Eagles Week 3 Injury Report

The New York Jets will be taking on the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3. It will be on a short week, as the Jets defeated the Indianapolis Colts on Monday Night Football. That could be part of the reason for the lengthy injury report, as the Jets had a number of players pop on there throughout practice this week.

First off, the players that are already ruled out. The Jets have two of those already against the Eagles, as wide receiver Chris Owusu and linebacker Trevor Reilly are both listed as out against the Eagles. Both players contribute on special teams, so that is where they will be missed most. The Jets will need other players to step up as kick returner and on coverage teams. Also, Owusu was carving out a role as the No.3 receiver on the team. Could this be where we see rookie second round pick Devin Smith take over?

Smith is one of eight players listed as probable. The Jets and their fans have been waiting for the lid lifting Smith to take the field, and it looks like this could be the week. Not only does it look like he will be making his debut, he could have a significant role in the game plan as well. The other seven players listed as probable are Stephen Bowen, James Carpenter, Antonio Cromartie, Breno Giacomini, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Lorenzo Mauldin and Geno Smith.

It is encouraging to see Mauldin as probable after the scary incident he suffered Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns. Mauldin laid motionless on the field for a period of time after suffering a concussion on a tackle. He was able to avoid a neck injury, and went through the NFL concussion protocol, looking like all systems go for this weekend. G. Smith is also in the running to be the Jets’ backup quarterback this week, as head coach Todd Bowles has yet to announce who will be the backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The Jets questionable players could really alter their game plan if they are unable to go, as four starters reside here. Darrelle Revis, Chris Ivory, Eric Decker and Willie Colon are all questionable. Both Revis and Colon are trending in the right direction to play, as both were limited participants on Thursday and Friday. Decker and Ivory on the other hand though do not seem as likely to play.

Ivory got in a limited session Friday, but was unable to participate the rest of the week. Decker was able to avoid a serious knee injury Monday against the Colts, but suffered a strained PCL. He didn’t practice at all and it would be a surprise to see him take the field Sunday, especially since the Jets have some depth behind him to give reps to.

Also on the injury report was cornerback Darrin Walls, listed as doubtful with a hamstring injury. He didn’t practice all week and will more than likely not suit up against the Eagles.

The Eagles are not without missing pieces as well, as linebackers Kiko Alonso and Mychal Kendricks headline their players listed as out. Also joining them are defensive ends Taylor Hart and Cedric Thornton. Running back DeMarco Murray is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, which will not help an Eagles offense that has struggled mightily get on track.

Wide Receiver Seyi Ajirotutu, tight end Trey Burton, defensive end Fletcher Cox and safety Chris Maragos are all listed as probable to round out the Eagles Week 3 injury report.
