On Friday night, the Yankees spoiled a lot of early opportunities to do damage against Steven Matz. The Mets were able to win on Friday by a score of 5-1 thanks to three home runs, but on Saturday, the Yankees returned the favor.

Mets’ starter Noah Syndergaard has struggled on the road this season, but on Saturday the Yankees got to the hard-throwing right-hander at Citi Field. In the first inning, the Yankees got on the board with a three-run home run by Carlos Beltran which scored Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner.

After getting the night off on Friday, Brian McCann gave the Yankees a power boost in the sixth inning with a two-run home run that scored Beltran and was the 26th of the year for McCann. Syndergaard was clearly hurt by the two home runs that the Yankees had, but he was able to strikeout eight batters in the loss.

Michael Pineda had a very good start for the Yankees, as he would never relinquish the lead he was given in the first inning. Pineda pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just four hits and one walk. Back-to-back singles in the sixth inning by Kelly Johnson and Curtis Granderson would end Pineda’s day early, as he was replaced by Justin Wilson after striking out Yoenis Cespedes.

Wilson came on to face the left-handed Daniel Murphy, but Wilson would load the bases with one out by walking Murphy. With the bases loaded, Wilson would lock it down by striking out David Wright and Juan Uribe to end the Mets’ threat in the sixth inning.

Joe Girardi did not mess around in the eighth inning with a five-run lead, as he brought in Dellin Betances to make sure the Mets didn’t cut into the lead. Betances did his job by pitching a scoreless eighth inning while striking out two batters.

With a comfortable lead in the ninth inning, Girardi elected to not use his closer Andrew Miller to start the inning, and instead brought in James Pazos to get out one batter. Chris Martin was then called upon, but he allowed two base runners, and Girardi would then make the call to Miller to get the final out. Miller would get Travis d’Arnaud to ground out to third to end the game and even the series.

With the Yankees win, the series will be decided on Sunday Night Baseball with CC Sabathia facing Matt Harvey.
