Coming into the game, the matchup of Masahiro Tanaka against Steven Matz was a very good one, and it lived up to the hype when the game started.

Whether it was nerves or not, Matz got off to a slow start on Friday, as the Yankees were able to get to him in the first inning. The Yankees got started with Brett Gardner working a walk which was followed by a Carlos Beltran base hit that set the Yankees up with runners on the corners with one out. Chris Young got the start batting cleanup with both Brian McCann and Alex Rodriguez out of the lineup. Young would have a sac-fly to score Gardner and give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.

The Yankees lead wouldn’t last long though, as Lucas Duda hit a bomb off of Tanaka in the second inning for his 22nd home run of the year. Allowing home runs would once again come back to haunt Tanaka, as in the sixth inning, Daniel Murphy took him deep as well for his 12th home run of the season.

Tanaka pitched six innings while allowing two runs on the two solo home runs, but that was enough to give him a loss in the game. Matz also pitched six innings, and despite the early innings struggle was able to come out with a win as he limited the damage against him. The Yankees bullpen has been very good for the most part this season, but in Friday’s loss, Chasen Shreve allowed a two-run home run to Juan Uribe which made it a 4-1 game in the seventh inning. Things didn’t improve for the Yankees’ bullpen in the eighth inning, as Murphy hit a triple off of Brandon Pinder and he would later score the Mets’ fifth run of the game on a James Pazos wild pitch.

The Mets’ bullpen did not struggle after Matz came out of the game, as Hansel Robles pitched one inning and struck out two batters, and Addison Reed did the same in the eighth inning.

Jeurys Familia ran into some serious trouble in a non-save situation in the ninth inning, as the Yankees loaded the bases with only one out. Gardner was the tying run at the plate but hit a harmless fly ball to left field that wasn’t deep enough to send the runner from third. Familia would then strike out Chase Headley to get the Mets the 5-1 win.
