Giants Injury Report Update: Victor Cruz, Jon Beason Both Out Week 1

The New York Giants will be heading to Texas to take on their NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys. They will be doing it a little short-handed though, as the Giants most recent injury report isn’t very encouraging for some players.

First, Jon Beason. Beason was a limited participant at practice on Wednesday, which was encouraging for his prospects to play this weekend. He did not practice on Thursday, saying, “Just sore. No point in pounding on it again. Trust me, I don’t want to miss Dallas. It means everything to me.” Well, he was unable to get on the field Friday as well, and was ruled out by the team as them embark on their road trip. His knee just has not responded as well as the Giants were hoping it would, and he will not dress in the season opener on Sunday night.

This is a big blow for the Giants, but one they cannot be too surprised at. While Beason is a natural leader and talented player, he is just never able to stay healthy. Beason played in every game the first four seasons of his career, but since 2011, Beason has appeared in only 24 of a possible 64 games.

The Giants released Beason’s backup from last season, Jameel McClain, last weekend when they needed to cut their roster down to 53 players. Without him, the Giants will probably turn to Uani Unga and the recently signed Jasper Brinkley. The middle of the Giants defense experiences a huge drop off without Beason, but the Giants have to be comfortable enough to use Unga there or else they wouldn’t have released McClain.

Beason originally injured the knee against the Jacksonville Jaguars August 22nd.

While seeing Victor Cruz out is disappointing as he has been targeting Week 1 all along, it is not very much surprising. Cruz has been battling a calf injury, which has forced him to miss practice since August 17th. There has been little discussion about how exactly Cruz injured the calf, but the guess is that it is a result of compensating from his patellar tendon surgery he was rehabbing from.

Whatever the cause may be, the Giants are expected to be without Cruz potentially for multiple weeks. The Giants have a weird schedule early on, as they play their first three games in 12 days. That means there is very little practice time, so Cruz may not play until Week 4 against the Buffalo Bills.

The Giants have three more players on their injury report in Owa Odighizuwa (foot), Jonathan Casillas (neck) and Cullen Jenkins (hamstring). Odighizuwa was a limited participant Friday, while Casillas and Jenkins were both full. All three are probable for Sunday night against the Cowboys.
