MLB Power Rankings Week 22

As we head into the last day of August and the first week of September, we have what will look like some great playoff races. Really only the AL Central is locked up now; the remaining five divisions don’t have a leader with more than a 5.5 game lead. That is something that can easily change in the coming weeks.

The Wild Card race in the American League has also not gotten any clearer; heck, at this point there are even more teams in the running than there was at this time last week. An unexpected hot streak by the Cleveland Indians has caused that, as they have the longest winning streak in baseball; has that cataputed them up our MLB Power Rankings?

If they are moving up, that means at least one team is moving down. There are a couple of teams that were in consideration for that, as the Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs all rode lengthy losing streaks this past week; how far did they drop?

Those are all things you’ll have to follow the slideshow to find out and see. Check out our MLB Power Rankings at Empire Writes back as we head into Week 22 of the MLB season.

More from New York Mets

30. Miami Marlins (52-79) The Marlins seem to be comfortable in the basement of our MLB Power Rankings, as they can never go more than week without returning to it. This week they get there courtesy of two series losses; three of four to the Pirates and two of three against the Nationals. One thing they can take away from the week though was a victory over Max Scherzer, something that has become easier of late but nonetheless is still an accomplishment. Marcell Ozuna has brought his power stroke with him back from the minor leagues as well, launching three home runs with five doubles in 55 at-bats since being called back up. One positive also is that Giancarlo Stanton could return this weekend from the DL, giving fans a reason to tune in.

29. Atlanta Braves (54-76) If not for their fellow AL East companion Marlins, the Braves would have a one-way ticket to last place in our MLB Power Rankings. They’re performing how we thought that they would at the start of the season, as they lost two of three to the Rockies before getting pounded by the Yankees over the weekend. Williams Perez and Julio Teheran both got destroyed by the Yankees, who were taking some frustrations out after getting blown out themselves earlier in the week. Things weren’t much better against the Rockies, as the Braves offense was unable to get anything going against a weak Rockies’ pitching staff.

28. Cincinnati Reds (53-76) It was a tough week for the Reds, as they continue to plummet to the bottom of our MLB Power Rankings. They were handled easily by the Dodgers in a sweep before losing two of three to the Brewers over the weekend. There just isn’t much to get excited about in Cincinnati right now, as they have inconsistent performers. The offense doesn’t hit, the pitchers do well and vice versa. It’ll be a long end of the season for the likes of Joey Votto, Todd Frazier, Jay Bruce and Aroldis Chapman.
