As we head into the final full week of August, we still have a muddled picture when it comes to the AL Playoff race. Essentially every team is still in it, as only one team currently sits double-digit games out of a Wild Card spot. That is basically the exact opposite of how things are in the NL, where the playoff picture is easier to depicte as there are only a handful of teams truly in the running; the only thing really in question is the division winners as the Wild Card teams look like they will be coming from the Central division.
With so many teams in the AL lumped together, there are a lot of important games to be played as a hot streak can vault a team up the standings, much like we saw this past week from the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers. In the NL, the same teams seem to be dominating, as a spring training favorite finally seems to have gotten things going.
Who will be the teams to make a move up the MLB Power Rankings next week? We will have to wait and find out. For now, let’s take a look at the Empire Writes Back MLB Power Rankings as we head into Week 21 of the MLB Season and final full week of August.

30. Colorado Rockies (49-76) The Rockies have now taken over the cellar in the Empire Writes Back MLB Power Rankings, and rightfully so. This is a team going nowhere currently, and might have a problem on their hands in Jose Reyes, who gave some candid comments you never want to hear from a player as he was displeased with being traded to a team in last place. They also got stomped by the Mets at Coors Field over the weekend, as they got swept and have lost 11 of their last 13 games. Charlie Blackmon also put on a clinic of how not to run the bases, making bonehead after bonehead mistake against the Mets on the basepaths.
29. Miami Marlins (50-74) Could the Marlins truly be the worst team in the NL East? That is what it looked like this weekend, as the Phillies handled them rather easily over the weekend, taking three of four in Miami. That was a poor way to start their homestand, which won’t get any easier as the Pirates will enter for a four-game series. After that they are back on the road to play the resurgent Nationals. Things could get ugly for the Marlins tonight as their once strong starting rotation has no more household names, with Tony Koehler being the nominal ace.
28. Cincinnati Reds (51-71) Owners of the longest losing streak currently in baseball, the Cincinnati Reds. Currently riding a nine-game losing streak, there isn’t much positive on the horizon. Billy Hamilton was placed on the DL, and Marlon Byrd was traded to the Giants, leaving the Reds offense without two producers in their lineup. Eugenio Suarez has been solid, but this team is definitely looking forward to the end of the season. We’re getting a look into what the future may hold for the Reds though, as they continue throwing rookies out there to start games in Keyvius Sampson, John Lamb and Raisel Iglesias.
