New York Jets Should Trade for Mike Glennon

After yesterday’s news that New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will be out 6-10 weeks with a broken jaw, there emerged an opening on the depth chart. A new QB will be needed to assume Geno’s position for at least the first month of the season.

There have been rumors that the Jets are looking into signing a free agent, possibly Rex Grossman or Matt Flynn. Signing anyone currently on the free agent list would not send the appropriate message to the fan base, as the Jets are only one piece away from being a serious Super Bowl contender. Their defense is top-notch, and they also have good offensive weapons. Starting a Grossman or Ryan Fitzpatrick would not bring the excitement that New York fans expect this season. Either of these players would merely be a short-term fix and not the answer for the years to come.

Instead, I believe the Jets should go out and trade for a high ceiling QB. One of these candidates is Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Mike Glennon. With No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston occupying the starting role in Tampa, they have no room for Glennon in their future plans (other than as a backup). This could mean that if they receive a good trade offer, they would not be hesitant to move him.

This is where beloved GM Mike Maccagnan steps in. Making a trade for Glennon would signal a shift in talent for the Jets. He is a 25-year-old QB, who in 2013, started 13 games (4-9 record) and threw for 2608 yards and 19 touchdowns by completing 59.4% of his passes. Last year, he played in 6 games and threw for 1417 yards and 10 touchdowns on 57.6% accuracy. These aren’t the greatest numbers in the world, but they sure look similar (maybe better) to Geno’s numbers in the limited sample size.

Glennon may not be the next Peyton Manning, but he very well could develop into a star QB with the right talent around him. The Jets have good receivers and running backs, so if inserted into the right situation, Glennon could thrive. Scouts have raved about Glennon’s strong arm and risk-taking ability ever since he was drafted. Many wanted him on the team last year, when both Geno and Michael Vick were struggling.

The cost of getting Glennon shouldn’t be that high, considering that he is Tampa’s backup QB. A late round pick should be well worth the potential that Glennon will bring to the table. Ultimately, the price will depend on the competition because there are rumors that former Jets coach Rex Ryan is looking to bring him into Buffalo.

There’s also other trade options out there, such as the Redskins’ Kirk Cousins, Eagles’ Matt Barkley, or Titans’ Zach Mettenberger, but I think Glennon is still the best talent available. With a high ceiling, Glennon could be the franchise QB the Jets have long been looking for. This is a risk worth taking for Maccagnan because there are no excuses, especially when your team is one piece away from championship aspirations.
