New York Mets Rumors: After missing out on Carlos Gomez earlier in the week, the Mets look determined to add at least one, if not two, outfielders prior to the MLB Trade deadline.

The New York Mets have already made two trades in the past week to help bolster their lineup and bench, while also adding another arm to their bullpen. They looked like they were going to add an impact bat in Carlos Gomez just days ago, but the trade fell through in a bizarre change of events. But, the Mets aren’t stopping in their pursuit of another bat, and could make more than one trade.

The rumors surrounding Jay Bruce have been prevalent, as the Cincinnati Reds were supposedly willing to take on Zack Wheeler as the centerpiece of a deal for their right fielder. But, it seems that the trade is starting to come apart a bit, as the Reds are no longer enamored with the package the Mets are offering.

Could that be because the Mets are now targeting another option? The Mets have a number of options they are looking into adding before the 4 PM ET deadline, but one that seems to be moving towards the front of their list now is Detroit Tigers’ outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Cespedes would be an impact bat for the Mets, but it would be interesting to see what kind of package they would be willing to offer to the Tigers. Cespedes is an impending free agent at the end of the season, so it is hard to imagine the Mets offering a package like the ones they were giving the Brewers for Gomez and supposedly the Reds that included Wheeler and Wilmer Flores.

What makes a potential package for Cespedes keeping an eye on is because there are also rumblings that the Mets are looking to not only add one bat, but two prior to the deadline.

The Mets obviously need offensive help, but many people assumed one bat would do it. But, with growing concerns about Michael Cuddyer’s knee, and the Mets souring a little bit on Juan Lagares in centerfield as his arm injury is hindering him, the Mets could look to upgrade at both. It is tough for the Mets to count on rookie Michael Conforto to carry the offensive load at this time, so adding veterans to replace and coexist in the outfield with Cuddyer and Lagares seems to be the best route to take.

That would be quite a shock to see the Mets be that aggressive as they have been penny pinching for years it seems. But, Sandy Alderson seems like he is in a position in which he has to make a move, especially after what happened with the Brewers and Gomez. He owes it to the fans and everyone involved in the organization to upgrade this offense and make the Mets a true contender.
