New York Mets News: Anthony Recker Recalled, Johnny Monell Demoted
New York Mets News: After their 18-inning marathon Sunday, the Mets have decided to make a change to their bench, recalling catcher Anthony Recker and demoting catcher Johnny Monell.
Whenever a marathon game is played like the 18-inning one the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals went through Sunday, roster moves are expected. Usually an extra arm is promoted from the minor leagues as bullpens are taxed from the extended game. Well, the Mets aren’t a usual team, as they went in a different direction following Sunday’s game.

A roster move was made, but it was not an expected one. Instead of promoting an extra reliever such as Logan Verrett, the Mets decided to make a change on their bench. Backup catcher Johnny Monell was demoted back to Triple-A, with Anthony Recker being recalled.
The Mets must not have been comfortable with giving Monell another start at the major league level, so they called up Recker to backup Kevin Plawecki. Plawecki will almost assuredly have the night off tonight in the series opener against the Washington Nationals after catching all 18 innings against the Cardinals on Sunday. So, Recker will most likely be the man behind the plate when Matt Harvey makes his first start of the second half.

Recker had originally been demoted to Triple-A on June 14th despite Travis d’Arnaud being on the DL almost all season. The Mets decided to go with youngsters Plawecki and Monell instead, but the performance of Recker could not be ignored any longer. In 75 at-bats with Las Vegas, Recker performed just as everyone seems to in the hitter friendly ballpark and league. During his time in the minors, Recker slashed .293/.398/.640 as he absolutely crushed the baseball. He launched seven home runs with 19 RBI.
He is being called up on a bit of a hot streak, as Recker has hit in four consecutive games and seven of his last eight. He also has hit a home run in two consecutive games, so the Mets are hoping that some of that production follows him to Washington to help perk up a dormant offense.

That could be a tall order for Recker, who has struggled mightily with the big league club this season like many of his teammates. He is slashing only .143/.276/.265 with two home runs and three RBI in 49 at-bats. That is actually worse numbers than what Monell was giving the Mets, as he hit .178 (8-for-45) with four RBI with the Mets, but Recker will be getting the call as the backup catcher for the time being.
This may not be the last move that the Mets make during this series though, as Michael Cuddyer could also be ticketed for a trip to the DL, which would prompt the Mets to make yet another roster move because of an injured player.
