Knicks Fill Their Roster With Jason Smith: Trades On The Horizon

The New York Knicks as of today are:

PG: Jose Calderon, Pablo Prigioni, Shane Larkin

SG: JR Smith, Tim Hardaway Jr., Iman Shumpert, Wayne Ellington

SF: Carmelo Anthony, Cleanthony Early (not signed, but the team needs depth at three besides using small ball lineup with the SG’s)

PF: Andrea Bargnani, Amar’e Stoudemire (can both play center)

C: Samuel Dalembert, Cole Aldrich, Jason Smith

These are the 14 players that are under contract with the New York Knicks as of July 16th.

Shannon Brown (free agent), Jeremy Tyler (non guaranteed / team option) and Thanasis Antetoukounmpo (unsigned draft pick) are playing in the summer league for the Knicks.

Phil Jackson has been trying to get himself a solid roster for the regular season and after signing Jason Smith for the mid-level exception, he is out of money. There are still a few possibilities to complete the 15-man roster, and he could go with either one of the three aforementioned or he could move on to further trades. Shannon Brown would be a good option in terms of knowledge of the triangle and experience on winning teams. Antetoukounmpo is a great defender, but according to Jackson himself he needs to learn how to ‘play the game’. Jeremy Tyler has had a great summer league so far, establishing himself in the paint and passing efficiently out of the post.

Alan Hahn has mentioned the trade possibilities and I like that option. In my opinion, Tyler will come back and Wayne Ellington will go somewhere else, simply because of the fact that Phil Jackson hasn’t been talking about him at all and even mentioned the words ‘guys that we inherited from the trade’. He doesn’t seem set on keeping Ellington at all. We’ll have to wait and see. In that case he would bring another forward or maybe re-sign Brown for a veteran minimum just because of their history together.

Anyways, this is all pre-speculation, considering we have a long way to go till training camp and the final roster cuts and signings.

Hope you are enjoying this off-season as much as I am.
