As unsurprising as it was to fans of the New York Knicks that Amar’e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani have opted in to the final year of their respective contracts, it was equally as expected that Carmelo Anthony would not. Yesterday ‘Melo made it official that he will be testing the NBA free agent market.

Carmelo was slated to earn $23,333,405 next season.

Anthony has played parts of four seasons as a member of the Knicks organization after a trade with the Nuggets sent ‘Melo from Denver to New York in February of 2011. In his 226 games as a Knick, Carmelo has averaged 26.5 points , 7.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game, being selected to the All-Star game every season in New York. He also captured the NBA’s scoring crown during the 2012-13 campaign, avergaing 28.7 points per game over the course of the season.

There has been absolutely no shortage of speculation as to the landing spot for Carmelo if he were to forego the final year of his deal with the Knicks both on this website and elsewhere. Now the speculation will certainly heat up even more.
