In the midst of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, there was a match thousands of miles away that got the attention of New Yorkers.
The New York Cosmos, a NASL team, ran over the New York Red Bulls, the MLS NY Franchise, in a game for the U.S. Open Cup.
Both teams went hard at it, but you could see the Cosmos squad going at it even harder. The 2nd division team wanted to show they could compete for the New York fan base and after 90 minutes they accomplished it.
The Cosmos started the game with fury, putting pressure on the Red Bulls since the beginning, being rewarded at the 8th minute mark. The pressure continued, but only in the 2nd half they managed to stretch the score, reaching the back of the net at the 72 and 78 minute marks. A victory with authority like this sends a message to fans around the city, that maybe the Red Bulls really need to rethink the way they are approaching their games. Coach Petke said there was no excuses to be made, and that he felt his team didn’t feel the sense of urgency it should have. Considering the poor campaign they are having this season, this sense of urgency should be shown every game if they have the intention of staying at the top of the New York’s soccer scene.
If there was any doubt that the 2015 season would bring changes for the New York fan base, today the argument was settled. The NYCFC is already making their moves to bring people to their games and after today’s win, the Cosmos will certainly have a few new fans added to their network.
At least for today, the New York Cosmos is the best soccer team in the great state of New York.
