With the 12th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Giants have selected Odell Beckham Jr., out of Louisiana State University, a wide receiver who many consider to be ready to come in and contribute on Sundays right out of the gate. He is a strong-handed receiver that can catch the ball in traffic and also has speed that makes him a dangerous threat down the field.
One of the biggest problems Eli Manning had last season was chemistry with his receivers which played a hand in the outrageous number of interceptions he threw. Odell Beckham is NFL-ready and will presumably battle for the #2 receiver spot with both Reuben Randle and Mario Manningham, who are all behind Victor Cruz. He is the type of guy who can be trusted to bring in tough catches but his route running ability helps him get out in the open field – the area he’s most dangerous in.
Although I really expected the Giants to go after a lineman – whether it be offensive or defensive – as I think the trenches were one of the weakest points for them last year, Beckham is a safe pick and will immediately give Eli Manning another deep threat. Even if he doesn’t begin the season getting regular snaps, which I think he will, his offensive game is very versatile (set an LSU record for all-purpose yards in 2013) and not only can he be used against any defensive scheme but he will probably be the new kick returner for the Giants, a spot that will give him a chance to show off his wheels.
The Giants’ next pick will be coming up in the 2nd round, No. 43 overall. It’s tough to predict who will be remaining on the board still but I think the Giants need to pick up the best lineman available no matter what side of the ball he’s on. The only way I could see them going somewhere else is if a cornerback/safety falls surprisingly low who they feel can’t be passed on.
How do the Giants fans feel about this pick? Did the G-Men make the right selection at No. 12? If not, who would you’ve picked?
